I always enjoy her books. This was no exception. Not great literature, but who cares?

I enjoyed every page of this lovely story. Julia Williams has created a cast of interesting, warm and realistic characters who are all very human. It's a comforting read - covering issues that most of us wil deal with in our lives sometime. The author deals with all of the issues in a humourous and realistic way - there are characters I detested and some I really loved - just like real life, and there were times I would have like to knock a few heads together - but this all added to the novel.
I have to say that this is a time when I really appreciate my book club. I ended up enjoying this book, but it was very slow going for a long time. If I hadn’t been reading it for my book club, I believe I would have put it down toward the beginning and never gone back to it, but I am so glad that I felt obligated to read it and therefore finished it. My favorite part was the fictional description of how Charles Dickens got the information that led to his writing the book Oliver Twist. I was smiling through that whole short section of this book. Still smiling thinking about it. The writing is poetic & beautiful. Obviously well researched historical fiction. There is a mystery but what’s revealed is not what ended up being most important to me. What fascinated me most were the development of the many interesting characters, and especially the impeccable descriptions of what it must have been like in famine stricken Ireland in the mid 1800s.
NEVER TRUST A MAN IN A TURBAN

Refreshing to have a young male protagonist--to have his angst be about more than just the self-absorbed navel-gazing of so many YA novels. Cassell Sharpe has real problems, not least that he believes he murdered the girl he was into. The story is interesting, creative, well-crafted, and far better written than many more sucessful YA books of late. But somehow, I found I cared less than I should have; that smart-teen smartmouth reduced his emotional credibility. So, not great; but fast and fun.

Great book I know Young teenagers would love this book
Finally a five star book. A lot of this story is about the family over time, coming from the 'old country', in this case Grecian part of current day Turkey. What effect do all the actions, opinions, culture and biology have on a person. The author's style is straightforward. There are no sweeping poetical or other descriptive passages except to directly indicate the world as perceived by the main character at the time. If I had to summarize I would say life is complicated but we all get through it. I like to include a quote. This is a favorite passage: p.217 . . . that the words we have in English for emotions are too simple . . . I'd like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic traincar constructions like, say, "the happiness that attends disaster." Or, "the disappointment of sleeping with one's fantasy." I'd like to show how "intimations of mortality brought on by aging family members" connects with "the hatred of mirrors that begins in middle age." I'd like to have a word for "the sadness inspired by failing restaurants" as well as for "the excitement of getting a room with a minibar."

Great illustrations but the story is somewhat random although it goes through the letters of the alphabet. Dog is back and into as much trouble as ever. The clumsy canine finds an alphabet's worth of adventure as he patrols his neighborhood..."

I didn't like this as much as the first Vonnegut book that I read, but it was still a quick refreshing read. I really enjoy his style, just thought the story lacked a little in this one.
