I agree with the book blurb from RT on the back cover: all the danger, treachery and romance a reader could ask for. Personally, reading Undertow took me back to St Maarten again-the beaches on the east coast, the abundant seafood, the warm salty water, feeling as seasick as Teal, and being in love. They also had awesome jewellery stores there... that was cool but I don't remember seeing any pirate treasure. :)

Sometimes, I just want to read a book about a smart but not overly pretty modern woman who's trying to find Mr. Right. Chick lit fills a niche, but I don't want it to be dumb. Pace is a lively, smart writer who represents the genre really well. I wish Meg Cabot wrote like this.

Pretty good angry liberaltude ranting. Margaret Cho is God(dess). I think a lot of it is transcribed stand-up routines, so there is some redundancy. And a couple of odd moments, probably due to the ad-lib nature of stand-up. (Insulting Bush by saying he has sleep apnea? Huh?) If you're looking for tightly reasoned arguments, read Chomsky. Otherwise I would call this a Good Read.

An amazingly comprehensively and sympathetic study of Boston racial relations in the '60s and '70s, during the era when forced busing began. Focuses on three families - the Irish McGoffs, the Yankee Divers, and the black Twymons. Not a book you can finish off in a few days, but the effort is worth it, particularly if you live in Boston and want to know how we got to where we are today. The story is tragic, but the author's insight is encouraging.
Sad and intriguing, hard to believe it's a children's novel.
This book started out good, but went downhill from there. I liked the whole parallel plotline structure. The way they both kept the same characters, settings and events was very creative. And forgive me for thinking so, but Irina seemed like a much stronger character when she did commit adultery. But as I got closer to the end, I started to really not like her. Too much reliance on men to make her who she is. I don't know why, but she just wasn't a protagonist I could get behind.
This was a great book, that made a really easy, light read!
This book is great in the beginning, and then gets less good as you go further on and then gets great at the end. I have been thinking about it endlessly since I finished it. It made me compare and contrast central characters/heros/heroines in other books... this book definitely offers a new dimension... good stuff.
