Loved the first 3/4 of the book, then it started to get a little dull and repetitive.

I reviewed The Speedliters Handbook by Syl Arena and said it was a very good handbook, but the example photographs were pretty mundane. This book is the exact opposite! Instead of using specially taken photographs to explain lighting with small strobes, Joe McNally looks back through his portfolio of National Geographic, Time, Life and Sports Illustrated photographs, and explains in rambling, folksy language how he lit each one. It is highly repetitive, but drives home McNally's style of shooting. Mainly this is a book for inspiration and raising awareness of just what is possible with a Speedlight/lite, an umbrella, and some gaffa tape. It's all about an awareness of light and colour, and how to be creative. There are a few chapters about the gear side of things, but that is all Nikon gear. If you want to know every button and menu and option for the Canon gear, get Syl Arena's book.
Much better and more fast paced than Fallen, but still left a ton of unanswered questions and ended in a frustrating way, but worth the read.

Have only skimmed through the first chapter, but it looks like an excellent and accessible introduction to the topic.

This is a fine historical novel with interesting characters and a good mystery. It is set in the 1500's while Elizabeth reigns with plots surrounding her to bring Mary to the throne. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good historical thriller.

A sweet, chick-flick-tastic read, but one of the few I've ended with a happy, warm-fuzzy feeling.

Politically-oriented, personally revealing frequently. In the tradition of editor, Eggers', self-loving/self-loathing personality dynamics. Includes the Iraqi Constitution, "Best American Fake Headlines", and most importantly, "Best American Things to Know About Chuck Norris."
I'm having trouble making up my mind about where this book falls, shelf-wise. Do I put it on my fantasy-adventure shelf? My weird-fun-creatures shelf? My young-adult-fic shelf? There's not much I can say about this one without spoiling it, so I'll leave it at this: Get this book out of your library - preferably a copy with well-worn and slightly yellowed pages - and read it at bedtime. You will get no sleep whatsoever and you will enjoy it, I think. It's not the most original storyline out there, but in my opinion fairly well-written - and the photos are a fun and unique touch.
