Robin McKinley has always known how to tell a story and Pegasus is no exception. her details are rich but more importantly her characters, particularly her heroines, are multifaceted. When Princess Sylviianel (Sylvi is ceremonially bound with her Pegasus - Ebon - the last thing she expects is to be able to communicate telepathically. Her strong connection sends waves throughout the foundations of the kingdom. Never before has a human been able to communicate with his or her Pegasus without the aid of magicians and the closeness between her and Ebon could have dangerous consequences. I have long been a fan of Mckinley. Her fantasy is grand but truly grounded by its characters who are, like all of us, faulted, but strong in the ways that matter most. This book was a little slow mostly because McKinely studies her characters and also because (SHOCKER) it's a Part I and not a complete novel. Just as the novel ends the action ramps up which is the main reasoning for the rating.

4.5--almost perfect. I was annoyed with the whole bully theme. It's a cop-out way to get the reader to care for the protagonist. The conflicts and resolutions were too easy. That said--Mitchell's brilliant. I can't wait to read Cloud Atlas.

Brings the series to a somewhat dark (but fulfilling) conclusion

What a dreadful "memoir"! I post this as a warning, not a recommendation. Riding high on a wave of Sedaris, I found Running with Scissors at the airport just before a long flight and decided to give it a try. Boy! Between this book and the bag of dried apricots I ate, it was a VERY painful journey. Burroughs' story was too wacked out to be a memoir, even if he was drawing from his emotional memory, rather than actual events. I had a hard time believing him as a narrator. That's all I remember, as this book was not important enough to keep detailed critiques about.

This shouldn't be confused with one of her normal myteries. This one's an attempted investigation and speculation as to the identity of the infamous Jack the Ripper. She makes a compelling case. This was pretty good light reading if the subject holds any interest for you.

While I have a copy of this book on my shelf, it has been some time since I read it ... at least five years or so. I remember it being a social commentary of a group of boys who revert to [arguably] a sub-human culture on an island they are shipwrecked on. One group seems more intent on a peaceful existence and maintaining a fruitful life while the other group is much more reckless, self-indulgent, and looking for trouble. The funny thing to me is that there were no females on the island. Therefore they were all doomed to die and be completely forgotten, eventually, without ever producing any offspring who might have a future. You'll see if that is how things pan out, however, when you read the book.

Writing in mock broken English from the perspective of a naive Vietnamese prostitute with perky tits is so fucking stupid, but it still gets you a Pulitzer. This book makes me want to beat up my friends.

This book was really great if you want to know basic information about Abraham Lincoln and his life, before and during his presidency. I felt that it was very unbiased and I was able to read the book without wishing that the author would just tell me the facts. Freedman is very honest and does outline some of Lincoln's weaknesses, which I appreciate seeing when I read about "heroes" of our time.

Cam and Willow have been best friends since they were children. They have involved in every aspect of each others lives, except for the intimate aspects. Now, after all these years, they begin to see the other in a new light. Repressed feelings and emotions surface forcing the to face the reality of their fate. I thought the story started off a little slow, in fact it was so slow that I put it down for about a month before going back to it. After they reached Cam's parents home is really when the story started to gain some momentum. By the time they were finally prepared to face their feelings for each other, the story was almost over! I loved and hated the tension and sexual chemistry that was brewing right beneath the surface...I was thinking: JUST DO IT ALREADY! Though I liked the book, it didn't wow me-I didn't love it. I would liked to have seen a little more sizzle between these characters because I really felt they had it...lurking just out of reach. ✳✳ Copy provided by the author/publisher for an honest review.
Gift from Kathy. Interesting read if the origins of the Internet boom intrigue you, but not something I'd go too far out of my way for.
