I received this book for free from one of the Goodreads First Reads giveaways. I received the book on a Tuesday afternoon and had it finished by Thursday morning. I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved it. My favorite books tend to be ones that the author can pull me into the story and make me relate to the characters. Sarah-Kate Lynch did just that with this book. I was immediately able to identify and feel empathy for Lily. There were times where I wanted to cry with her. I felt like I understood why she felt the way she did. But, not only could I identify with Lily, I found myself really understanding and feeling sorry for Daniel. I wanted to be mad at him but I just couldn't be. I also loved all the little old, eccentric widows in this book as well. Their humor and wit really pulled the book along. I liked the ending even if it wasn't conventional. All in all, I really enjoyed this book. So happy that I got a chance to read this thanks to the Goodreads giveaways. I don't think this would be the kind of book that I would have picked up on my own at a bookstore but I loved it so much!

Surprisingly, the most heartbreaking story of Van Gogh I've ever read came from an art book! Okay, you probably want more documentary details about the paintings and less about the the painter. But what's great is the fact that Cutts and Smith neatly juxtaposed the artwork and the commentary features, giving a sense of chronological events in Van Gogh collection. The commentary was not primarily focused on the technique, instead it was more biographical. We can emotionally relate a painting with a period in Van Gogh's life which gave an influence to it. In the early pages we can see the calm, unruffled, and idyllic style of Van Gogh's painting which signify early stages of his career. As we turn the pages, the paintings become more and more vigorous, yet disturbed, implying the more mature stage. Along with the more distinct style that had brought him to be a prominent post-impressionist in the history, the story of sadness, exasperation, and dejection began to take over. Closed by the famous "Wheat Field With Crows" (1890), the painting of a place in which Van Gogh shot himself, this book has become an art book that provide more than informative notes on the paintings. It's quite successful in bringing out emotional values that some other books might fail to capture.

I really enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time when I was a kid. On rereading, I discovered that I had definitely forgotten the way Christian symbols and metaphors kind of beat you over the head in this book. It and A Wind in the Door (which, like the other three books in this omnibus, I had never read before), could definitely benefit from some subtlety. Both books are fun, but also frustrating. A Swiftly Tilting Planet really made up for this, though. The symbolism and overarching themes are balanced by an awesome story. I love the way the time travel elements are used, and the common threads among the generations Charles Wallace visits and their ties to mythology are handled really well. I also felt like the message of " 'gifted' people are a completely separate species from the rest of humanity and will never be accepted by 'normal' people" was tempered in this story. When I started reading Many Waters, I had a real "what the hell" reaction when I realized what the primary story was going to be about. But I really enjoyed it. The twins are fun characters and more accessible than Meg and Charles Wallace ever are, to me at least. Her treatments of the seraphim and the nephilim really appealed to me, and I thought she dealt well with issues of puberty and sexuality here. Overall, I really enjoyed the second two books and I really liked seeing the development of writing style and themes over the course of many books and much time.

thia book is very slow and the mystery is not a very good one. the only interesting part is the flesh eating bugs and reading about how the writers in the book lived.

The Paris Wife is the story of Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemingway's first wife. Unlike the version told in A Moveable Feast, this version is told from Hadley's perspective. I wish that more of the story would have developed after their separation. It was a quick read and well written, providing interesting insight into Hemmingway's childhood, depression, and ultimatley his death.

Miss Manners is the master of the freezing reply to a left-handed compliment. She is also hilarious.
