I think the For Beginners series of books makes for great public transportation reading, though the quality varies. The best one I’ve seen so far is The History of Clowns. This one hops from the trickster god motif to fools, jesters, comedians, yippies and of course clowns. Trace back Pee Wee Herman’s family tree and find Diogines the Cynic.

While the Moon books started out pretty good the introduction of a "other" world just threw it for me. Didn't not like this new twist to the Were novels.
For some reason I remembered liking this book, so I re-read it. Let's just say it was painful ...

What a series of twists and turns this story took. Stefanie Pintoff certainly captured the era of early 1900s New York. We often think that crime and violence have only gotten worse. The conditions that people lived in were connected with what they were willing to do in order to survive. In this first novel in this series we are introduced to a very likeable police detective Simon Ziele, who I look forward to following on further investigations. There are dark shadows lurking everywhere and I owuld certainly say that the writing echoes that of another crime novel writer Caleb Carr although perhaps not quite as strong just yet, after all this is a first novel. I do think this is well worth a read if you like this type of story. The outcome was certainly well masked through out and the reader was brought to an exciting climax. There is much to like and at times I was on the edge of my seat. I look forward to more of Stephanie Pintoff's work and can understand why this book won an award.

This seems to me to be a book about truth, where the truth lies, and what truth means. One narrator (described disparagingly by the other narrator as "the writer-man") seems to be telling the story in linear fashion - a "proper" story. His efforts are derailed when the Warner woman, the subject of the story, discovers what he's up to and begins telling the story her own way. Each narrator struggles to tell their version, ricocheting off each other's words, until finally they collide, revealing - perhaps - the real truth of what happened. It is also a book about perceptions: about how a Warner woman in Jamaica can be seen as natural, but in Britain, she is seen as insane. Perhaps on a broader level, it is also about the way the white colonial narrative enforces itself upon people, even when we are unaware of it. It is certainly a damning indictment of the way black people have been treated in the British mental health system. Worth reading for anyone who can stand a little unreliable narration.

Adam gave me an early edition, so there are some editing errors. But despite that fact I found myself pulled in by his well thought out characters. The plot is solid and doesn't stream you in unnecessary directions. You can tell by the end of the book that his writing became easier for him. I enjoyed it immensely and hope to see another book with the name Adam Craig on the front cover.
