Another one of my all-time favorites. I don't know how I stumbled on this book, but its worth the 955 pages (yeah really!). What I liked best about this book is the exploration of the main characters alienation. He is neither British nor Indian, Christian, Muslim or Hindu, he's everything and nothing all at once. Actually I might recommend this book if you liked Life of Pi. Although I would say that this is a much more thorough and interesting tale. The novel takes place in India in the late 1880s, during a series of battles between Afghanistan and India and other various battles for the East India Company. Ashton (also called Ashok) is born to an English professor and a British mother in India. However his parents die of cholera when he is a baby and he is raised Hindu by a woman named Sita. Ashok lives a life in poverty as an attendant for a noble family and also becomes very close to the games keeper who is Muslim and learns their traditions as well. It's only when he is 13 or 14 that he learns that he is English and not Indian. He's sent to British boarding school and finds himself totally alienated. When he is 18 he joins the Corps of Guides and returns to India. Lots of battles and love affairs follow. This is a great book if you like detailed family sagas and historical novels, since I believe the book is couched in actual events.

I love the inclusion of Philly places in this book. I just want to know who A is! I feel like it's either Mona or Melissa for some reason. They are both suspicious, especially Melissa. I look forward to completing this series.

** spoiler alert ** Ippo won the rookie tournament but will have to withdraw from the upcoming match with Sendoh, the rookie winner from the tournament on the other side of Japan. Sendoh is extremely enthused to be fighting him and so disappointed when he hears Ippo is withdrawing that he travels to Tokyo from Osaka to make Ippo change his mind. Ippo explains regarding his fist, but Sendoh sticks around. When he finally leaves, he tells Ippo he'll be waiting in Osaka. This spurs Ippo to consult a bone doctor, who tells him that he may be able to fight if he follows her regime. He persuades the manager to let him try and begins training by strengthening his shoulder muscles, as the doctor instructed. Entertaining but not that great a volume. Sendoh is a funny character, but even though his enthusiasm is supposed to make him likable, pressuring Ippo to accept the match when more damage to Ippo's fist could mean the end of his career is too serious for me to overlook. Then again, he's not the main character, so I guess he doesn't have to be likable.

I rarely give 5 stars but for me this book deserved it It was amazing. As a small child I remember the situation with the Japanese - even though we lived inland. As I grew up I understood more and more about it. It wss a time of terrible racial prejudice. This book is one of the most beautiful love stories I have read. It rings so true. It treats the prejudices as a background to the story, making them seem all the more poignant and even ridiculous - sometimes we think we have not come along way as a culture and society - but compared to these times we can see the journey has made much progress and is going in the right direction. The family dynamics were also subtley handled.
