Loved rereading this one for the Newbery Challenge.
Story about a college professor who gets laid off because he uses a word in class that also has a racist meaning -> 'spooks'. He fights against this seemingly injustice and wants to convince a local author to publish a book about this scandal to get his name cleaned. Said author refuses, but eventually does write a book - but not only about the Spooks-incident but about the professors whole life. Coleman Silk was born in the 1920s into an African American family, was a clever kid and studied hard. But for a while he also pursuited a career as a boxer and rather incidentally is passed as a white boy because of his light skin. When he joins the army in the 1940s he signs up as a white soldier, with the racial segregation still being on full blast he believes he would have unjustified disadvantages otherwise. From then on, he leads the life of a white man and eventually even breaks up the contact to his mother and siblings, because he does not even want to tell his wife and kids of his dark secret. Actually I expected this secret of Coleman of more importance to the story, that it gets revealed and sets going a couple of events. But NOTHING. As far as I understand it the author finds out about it only in retrospect when the sister of Coleman enters the story. But even then this revelation has no further impact on any other character in the story. WHY? Instead the story rotates around Coleman and his affair with a much younger woman of much lesser intellect. And his previous achievements for the college. I believe this could have been a very interesting book, when the focus of the story had been different. I'm still going to watch the movie, maybe they altered the plot for the better.
I've been reading this book since last June. It's well written, I like the idea...but it's going nowhere. I'm 660+ pages in to it, and I really don't know where the plot is going.
I am amazed at the difference one man can make. I was inspired and so interested in the descriptions of Pakistan.

Interesting to see Vachss branch out from child sex power plays to adult on adult crime that only periphereally involve children. He picked up the pace a bit in this one... reserving judgment on Crystal Beth; I want to like her as she's not a one-time Noir fantasy lay, but... we'll see.
very boring in the beginning, I only continued reading it because I can't sleep on planes and my ipod died. But, by the end of the book, I was leaning forward in my seat and almost forgot to buckle when the plane landed.
Not a boring econoics book :)

This is a nice love story and it's a great novel for the beach.
My least favorite of Sue Miller's collection. I was rather sick by the end.
