What a strange book. It's a memoir, and very well written, easy to read. If what this child experienced is as he tells it, it's a wonder that he grew up to be a productive citizen at all, and because the publisher includes an excerpt from his next book, we know that he did. I can only believe that it was his and his friend Natalie's senses of humor that got them through. Totally bizarre. It's kinda like: Teach a kid to laugh, and he'll find his place in a world gone mad.

This quote from Dorothy Parker sums up my feelings on this book: "This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force." That's exactly what I did when I got to the completely predictable (and incredibly disappointing) "surprise" ending. I really can't believe I persevered that long.

Couldn't handle it when the main character changed for the 3rd time. Long and boring with nothing to look forward to.

This book came highly recommended. I thought it was sweet and good-natured, but a little dull. But then, some people have said similar things about me.

A perfect read for that loner 13 year old girl who needs something to read to help her feel less alone in the world.
This is a book that I keep putting down before finishing because it is exquisite and painful. The world Roth paints is so real, both near at hand and just shadowing our past and so it brings my fears too near the surface for me to be able to stand them for long. It is remarkable, however.

Loved this! Total comfort read -- SEP doesn't disappoint.
I thought the Messenger was good. I liked how the author made the forest have emotions too, as well as people. I liked that the author described everything that happened in detail so that you could really get the feeling of the emotions that were going on in the story. The setting went from happy with to very gloomy, sad, and anger. The forest in the book was its own character. As things got bad in the book so did the forest. Matty was the only one that never got warned by the forest to not go back in. But when things got bad Matty had to go get his almost father's daughter Kira. The setting got very depressing and sad near this part. It was a very shocking story in the end. It was painful but still very good. I think the message of this story is that you may have to give yourself to save everyone from having pain and hurt.
This was so funny! The chapter names were just perfect! Petersen did just a great job bringing the every-person into a zombie apocalypse. Just the right amount of horror and humor with out being overly gross or slap stick. The interview with "Zanderson Snooper" cracked me up. I could see this as a movie. I am so happy I decided to pick it up because the title struck me as cute. I can't wait to read the next book.
Watchmen is worth reading, although I wasn't as blown away by it as some people were. To be fair, it's the first graphic novel I've read, so I really have nothing to compare it to. There were sections I was a bit bored by (the pirate side-story), but I did enjoy the uncompromisingly flawed characters.
