Truman Capote being very typically decorative, nostalgic and Southern. Worth reading.

I randomly bought this book in a train station in Chicago, and I really didn't expect much from it. However, it totally swayed me to like crime novels!!

I'm on a Thomas Hardy high right now! I finished this book the other night, and yesterday Roger and I went and saw the movie of Far from the Madding Crowd, which was so, so good! But fear not, I will not allow myself to get carried away into gushing, since this review is about Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and not Far from the Madding Crowd (which is my absolute favorite Hardy novel). While not my favorite, Tess is a great and very worthwhile read. It is set amongst the laborers (or, rather, labourers) of late 19th century rural England. It features beautiful writing, of course, interesting characters, deep themes, with fate seemingly in charge, leading our hapless characters to tragedy. Yet I wouldn't say it's completely hopeless at the end. It's just quintessential Hardy. A few more of my thoughts, which contain spoilers: (view spoiler)
This is a combination of Mahaney's The Cross Centered Life and Christ Our Mediator. Very encouraging and heart-warming devotional thoughts on the Person and Work of Christ. A good Sunday afternoon or bed-time meditative read.
Good end to the series. I think it could have been two books, though. It was a bit rushed. I'm not a total fan of Brandon Mull's writing style, but it's an interesting story.
This book represents true nostalgia without glossing over the harrowing difficulties presented by pioneering. Cather’s beautiful sensuous writing made me appreciate the pace of this era which was more conducive to long and perceptive observation of environment and people. Well done Willa!
Very good.

yes he was a clergyman, but man have some Christians written some amazing fantasies. I guess an ability to believe in the fantastic and an active imagination are prerequisites for being a Christian(no hate mail please)

Thank you Scott for all those fabulous birthday books over the years. Now I need to go read me some Ethiopian history on Wikipedia...
3.5 stars, really. The first half of this book was a 3, the second half was a 4. Hannah's character (the fool) irritated me at times. She seemed so naive and wishy washy in her allegiances. One minute she's in love with Daniel (her betrothed/husband), the next she isn't, then she changes her mind again, and again. Ugh. Make up your mind already! The book was very engaging in parts and hard to put down. At other times (the first half), it was not so engrossing. I did really like the perspectives taken on Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth. From what I've read of the two, I always saw Mary has cold & heartless and Elizabeth being England's savior... the Queen of all Queens. After reading this, I feel such a sense of sadness for Mary and understand Elizabeth to be not nearly as great a woman as she was a Queen. I know this is historical fiction, but I liked that these two historical figures were portrayed differently than I would expect. It's a good reminder that things are not always as they appear.
