this book was a disappointment. the only positive thing to be said about this book is that it probably inspired people to read or re-read austen's novels. it inspired me to read northanger abbey and the rest of the unfinished works that came along with it. of them, i liked the watsons most.

Chick Lit gone totally awesome. I can honestly say that about this book. See, the thing is, I'm not all that into chick lit, so I haven't read all that much of it. I think the pastel or the high heeled shoe or the purse on the cover usually deters me because it literally screams out "CHICK LIT!" Now, I don't know what the final cover is going to be on this book since I was reading one of the advanced reader copies of it... but I hope it's nothing that will classify it as chick lit. This book gives Joyce Carol Oates Foxfire a run for it's money with it's wild girls, sex, violence, and accurate portrayal of the emotions of teenage girls. The fact that Martha O'Connor is not afraid to address issues that obviously take place in the lives of many teenage girls today, is just wonderful. It would be a wonderful book for parents of teenagers. If you're worried about your daughter, this book will allow you to see what she may be up to from another direction, and perhaps allow you to better understand her. It will also make you realize that some things you do that you think are for your daughter's best interest, sometimes isn't. You'll realize that you should talk to your daughter rather than act without knowledge of why she does what she does. It's also a wonderful book to make you feel less alone in the world. And that friendships never die, even if you never see each other again, you'll always be friends. It's reassuring. I loved the way O'Connor set up the style of the book... setting each chapter from a different girl's perspective, and having it take place in the past or present. The past being written in 1st person past tense, and the present being 3rd person present tense. It was organized in a messy and fun way, and easy to follow. She never let the ending surprise slip out. Which was awesome. There's so much more I want to say this book. I just can't get over how great this book was, but I don't want to spoil or give anything away. I'm so excited for this book to come out allowing so many more people to read it. I highly advise you getting this book as soon as possible. It's definetly a worthwhile and exciting new read.

This is another book where no thought is required. The crunchy mom in me is aghast at some of the choices that McCarthy makes, but she's funny and if taken with a grain of salt, it's enjoyable.

I had very mixed feeing about this book. On the one hand, it is extremely original in content and form. It was very funny sometimes. I'm a sucker for coming-of-age stories; this is Holden Caulfield for the 21st century. I like the way Eggers grapples with how to make sense of life amidst so much death, incl. that of his peers. I could really relate to this ashes-scattering scene and what a shock it is to discover that cremains are actually "Grape-nuts," not fluffy ashes. The narrator's most redeeming factor is his unflagging loyalty to the young brother. Now for my reservations: I guess I'm getting old, but I'm really tirred of reading the "F-word" every other sentence in contemporary, "edgy" novels. It is especially tiresome to find that in a book short-listed for the Pulitzer. I'm currently reading a Dickens and can't help but think that a novel like Eggers' isn't exactly going to still be compelling in 150 years as is "Dombey and Son." Eggers' work just seems like so much mental masturbation that I was eager to finish reaading. You know how they say, "Most first novels never should have been written""? I wonder how Eggers will look back on this in 30 years ...
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT! A MUST, MUST, MUST READ!
What an ending!

I first met the author at AWP in Chicago this year and heard him read these poems during a Kundiman panel. What I like about this book now that I've had a few months to digest it, is the movement - sometimes through grief, sometimes through memory, sometimes through a thoughtful analysis of the landscape. There may be snapshots here but it is not a still life in any sense of the word. It seems significant that the work begins with the word "you" and ends with the final word of the final poem being "home." There is a moving journey in between. Definitely read this one.

This is hands down my favorite book. The simple way Lee dealt with complex issues is jarring in its elegance. I truly loved the characters and the setting. So, so good.
