Unfortunately, my copy is a bit flawed. The second chapter of the book has every other page in French with text and pictures from the 5th chapter interspersed in the English version. It would have been nice to have the pictures that the text was referring to throughout chapter 2. Sigh. Otherwise, it was interesting to read more about Cezanne.

I can't find the first book in the series, but it's a glorious and deeply personal book for every woman who reads it, I think. I cried the first time I read it, and whenever I think of the end of Carmen's story I cry again. Lovely.

I started reading this book but ended up putting it down. I was not engaged in the story as the beginning although beginning at a climax dramatically slows down. After having it stare at me on my Goodreads profile I finally picked it up again. I restarted it from the beginning to give it a fair shake. I breezed through the beginning as my memory of the story kicked in. This story is told in several parts, alternating from past to present. The writing was well done and the story went along at a healthy pace. I reduce the stars only because I felt that outside of Bess's family that the relationships she develops feel like they are forced upon the reader. The often don't seem naturally occurring. This probably happened because there are actually 4 distinct stories interwoven and the book was too short for complete characterization to occur. The part I want to find out more and the part that I feel would have made this story whole was how did Bess learn about "good" magic. I feel like her transformation from when she flees her home to present is probably more interesting than her being chased by Gideon.

With that, her mother departs, extracting a promise from an older woman from the harem to watch over her daughter and to help her to survive. Head strong Alexa does survive the escape, by her wit and determination. From the Black plague, to the court of Queen Isabella, into the arrogant dangerous arms of the Queen's general, Diego Cordoba (H), and lastly into the nightmare of the hands of the terrifying leader of the Spanish Inquisition, Tomas Torquemada. Many parts of this story are not easy to read. Early on I got fed up with Alex's immature selfishness. Although IMO Osborne did a very good job with Alex's character...a self-centered, spoiled, pampered 17 year woman, raised in a harem of like-minded women as her models. Other characters brought tears to my eyes. A few times I felt I was thrown into a Vincent Price horror movie. Reading Osborne's rendition of the nightmare of the Spanish Inquistion is the stuff of nightmares. So reader beware.

I finally finished this book today. I'm not sure why it took me so long to finish it... Probably because I didn't want it to end. It ended of kind sadly but realistically and not some wish-fulfillment fantasy. I don't know if I totally understood the philosophies and messages in the books. For me, the characters and their relationships were more important -- understanding them, relating to them, being with them. As is usual with book I really enjoy I find myself feeling sad that my friends are gone, that I won't be able to visit that world again and know what else happens. I do see there is a follow-up story "Lyra's Oxford" and perhaps another book on the way, The Book of Dust. So maybe I'll get to see Lyra and Pan again.
