HAROLD BLOOM, Genios. Ed. Norma, 2005.

Glad I read this and not just settled for seeing the movie (which I did years ago). I felt such an intimate connection with the characters, but also felt I didn't know them at all. They were volatile, and that scared me a little. It is also what kept me reading.

This book was outside of the normal genre that I usually read. The book was voted one of the best reads of the Boston Globe in 2007, but it was not one of my favorite reads. Based in southeast Asia during the late 1960's-1980's, the story follows a group of CIA operatives during and after the Vietnam War. The main character was constantly in the shadow of his uncle, a WWII hero who had joined the CIA to avoid going home to the US (and his wife). The uncle ensures tries to ensure that the nephew is pushed off to the side of action, in a safe place, but the nephew cannot see his uncle playing him this way. There were layers of complexity with side characters. Other readers may enjoy this book, but I found it dark and depressing. I'm still not sure what message the author was trying to convey. Maybe I'm not smart enough to figure it out. I know that I missed a lot of biblical references (as the title implies). This book was just not a good fit for me.
This novel delves into the mind of an adolescent boy with autism. I loved this book. Check out my blog: http://jacqueline-whitney-biblomania.... and read my review

This is probably the best book I've read in the last year. I don't really like vampire stories, but this had vampires AND historial fact. Much better.
Again, not sure what to expect but enjoyed the ride. After book 1 I wasn't sure how we could read a whole series with Artemis as a protagonist, but he's becoming more endearing
I really liked the way that this story unfolded. While it was written for young adult readers, I often find myself reading book to check for appropriateness in my classroom. This story is centered around a girl who goes to a party between her 8th and 9th grade year. At this party something horrific happens that she can't tell anyone about. As a result, she finds herself beginning high school friendless. As the story unwinds, we find out the "whole story" and we follow her throughout her journey to face the friends and problems that she feels like destroyed her.

At times (towards the beginning) it was a bit slow and dragged out. It did pick up towards the middle and end of the book. All in all, I can see why some people had a hard time getting through it.

hard to get through but very interesting i had to take a break from this book and do a little lighter reading. seems like most religions follow a similar concept, kind of the same fundamental principles of christianity with different representations
