Disturbing and shameful that during a time when citizens were most in need of the protection of the law, that civil liberties were suspended and the worst instincts of so-called law enforcement professionals surfaced and went unchecked. Distressing that people affected received no apology for or even acknowledgement of what they suffered at the hands of those in charge, and continue to experience as post-traumatic stress. Enraging that the government's first priority was to build a temporary prison rather than helping people (and animals) who were stranded, hungry, and thirsty, and that our tax dollars paid for this upending of priorities. Not to mention the incompetence of FEMA. Kudos to Eggers for chasing this story down and making it public.

The DAM Book presents a fully comprehensive professional-quality digital workflow for photographers. This book is based on the Photoshop CS2 tools, specifically Bridge and then uses iView Pro (now Microsoft Expression) to do the cataloging. Unfortunately for me, I'm a Lightroom junkie, so while I could get some ideas from his workflow, much of the functionality exists in Lightroom today, just in a different way. If nothing else, the details on the Bridge settings and Camera RAW settings have enhanced my understanding of what Lightroom is doing. Finally, his instance on a STANDARD way of doing things is refreshing in the "creative" realm as is his guidance of a "Ratings pyramid" instead of a "Ratings lightbulb". If you're drowning trying to manage a large image collection, this will be a helpful book.

My favorite out of all of Stephenie Meyer's books, The Host had a lot of interesting ideas and ideals that made me think about it. Also, the idea of an alien invasion happening as it did in the book had me staying up at night wondering how the human population would be able to overcome something like it.

Such are the thoughts of Little Bee, the Nigerian refugee who has landed in a deportation center after she is caught stowed away trying to flee the horrors of her lost village. What unfolds is told in two voices-one belonging to Little Bee and one belonging to the English woman, Sarah, who saved Little Bee's life on a beach in Nigeria. For those of us who wish to make a difference by contributing money, or becoming active in groups who claim to make a difference, this book is a punch in the gut. It truly makes one feel as powerful and influential as a dust mote. There is no feel-good ending because this is about life. As one English official is explaining to Little Bee why she is not welcome, First, she says, you have to be English, don't you and second you must have our values. Interesting word, values. Whatever does it mean to have values, if one doesn't value human life. So don't read this book to be entertained or inspired. It is a glance at the human experience at its worst.
