Definitely an interesting read.
I had the good fortune to start this book a week after seeing King Lear for the first time. It was an unplanned coincidence. I don’t think knowledge of the play is necessary for enjoying the book, however. The themes of King Lear are timeless and universal and readers will connect with those themes on a personal level even without familiarity with Shakespeare. The book was great as a female take on King Lear. Smiley looks at the sympathetic characters of the play, King Lear and Cordelia, with a skeptical eye. She looks for depth in the characters of the other two sisters, seeing them not as thankless shrews, but as complex women with layered motives and dreams. The novel starts slowly; establishing the characters and the setting, but then builds to drama of Shakespearean proportions. The idea of turning royal Britain into a Mid-Western farm is interesting and Smiley executes it with skill.
** spoiler alert ** So... I just finished this lovely book. I truly enjoyed the banter between the two... Emma was brilliantly funny. Loved her dry wit and quick comebacks. Dexter played a decent straight man to her comedic tendencies, but he, too, was adept at snapping out a bon mot on occasion. Even though the majority of the story was somewhat heartbreaking as to each of their life situations, I stayed intrigued because I truly cared about these characters. *Spoiler* The only thing I didn't like was the abruptness of what happened to Emma. I know it was probably set up to shock, which it did, but it didn't draw the emotion out of me like it should have as I was struck with disbelief thinking it was all a cruel joke by the author. I kept turning page after page, reading, hoping to find that it was all a joke, a dream, a mix-up? But, alas, it wasn't. Can't say as of yet whether I'm okay with it all or not right now. Have to think on it for a bit, which is what a good book should make one do. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of these two and hated to see it end.

A guy whose father is a mountain and whose mother is a washing machine (and no, this is not metaphorical, that's really what they are, and one of his brothers really is an island and not in the John Donne way) gets involved with a winged girl and tries to bring wireless connectivity to Toronto while battling his murderous dead brother. I am not making this up.
funny and sad at the same time, the book has a different aura about it. completely enjoyed reading it till the last page.

Not many writers describe smells. This is devine if only for the appreciation of the range of olfactory experiences. The murders are just candy. The book is about smelling and experiencing.

I wanted to love this book but it's sooooo slow in parts. Took me forever to finish it. Cut out about half of the book and it'd be pretty good.
I loved every character in this book. Wonderful, fast afternoon read

3.5 STARS. I didn't like this as much as the first Skippyjon Jones book--the story is all over the place, which is the point, I think, but I found it just a bit too odd. Perhaps because I was listening to the included CD as I read and my husband kept laughing from the other room and saying, "WHAT is THAT!?" ;-p Okay, I was laughing and thinking the same thing, though! ;-> At least it was hugely entertaining, though a few of the phrases were a bit odd and seemed sloppy rather than clever. I must say Judy is an author who can TELL her story, though--it's a fun reading if you get the CD (alas, I've been to some author talks and not all authors are gifted verbal storytellers!)
