so i want 2 copies of this book: one to read over and over and over and one so that I can cut out and frame the illustrations, especially the one where Uncle Ry is looking at the moon, wishing he could have given that moon to that raccoon.

Erma Bombeck displays her usual amusing take on being a woman in the 70's. She's undertaken a journey to find herself with the help of self-help books, many of which are very thinly veiled satires of actual tomes from the late 70's. While hilarious and well-written, and like a lot written during this era, this book emphasizes and humorizes the role of a wife, mother, employee, and feminist. Probably best when read in the 1970's, although I wasn't there, so I couldn't say. I had the feeling that a lot of this was just sailing right over my head. Still enjoyed reading it, though, which says a lot.

Archetypes, collected unconscious, and synchronicity? Sound like new age hogwash to me. The writing isn't bad, but Jung was in fierce competition with Freud to see who can exctract more theories directly out of their rectums.

I liked the characters, and the storyline. Historically interesting. The father was a little preachy for me. There's a lot of inside LDS jargon going on here. -e
A cute take off of the Three Little Pigs. Cute for storytime

This was a second read for me; the first doesn't count because I know I only read it with half a brain; obviously, I was very preoccupied with something else. Too bad. This time I thoroughly enjoyed it. All the characters are so carefully drawn; you feel as if you're inside their heads whether on not you like them. My only complaint is that Ms Heyer chose to end it by simply...ending it. Bang! It was over. Finis. Gone. Just like that! Hard to take when you grown so close to the main characters. Still, it was an enjoyable read.

I loved this book. It was like a novela right out of Echo park.
