This is a great book exploring the possibility of dragons as an actual physical creature and the anatomy, physiology and behavior thereof. It was the basis for a Rankin-Bass animated movie, although the movie also drew heavily from "The Dragon and the George" by Gordon R. Dickson. What realy sets this book apart from others like it is that not only was itthe first--to my knowledge--of its kind, but it also exudes a sense of child-like wonder on the author's part as he attempts to piece together dragons' secrets from description and legend.

An odd little book that depicts the minutiae of one man's day.
Unbroken is unbelievably good. It's at the top of my favorite books ever! The harrowing story of survival was impossible to put down. I loved Hillenbrand's "Seabiscuit," and this surpassed that book. Beautiful writing, an amazing story and incredible detail brought WW II and those heroic men into focus in a way I have never experienced. The fact that this story was true made it even more captivating. This should be required reading in every American history course from high school on. Quit reading my review and start the book!

A very funny read and a great idea for a prop story.
Others have done a wonderful job descibing this story and Abott's writing. Very rarely does a book grab me and haunt me so much that I HAVE to read it. Abbott's story and characters pull you in so that you feel right in the middle of the conflict. Rather than talk about the story, I want to focus on the characters. I read this book through the lens of a Licensed Professional Counselor and I saw a lot of pathology. The book left me wondering what happened to Evie's mom? Why was she so void of emotion and why so withdrawn? The dynamic between Dusty and her father felt like emotional incest. She existed for him and he for her. I felt sad that Dusty had to play that part. The infatuation Lizzie has for Mr. Ferver felt very real. She idealizes him. At the same time he plays an important role by offering her a fatherly kind of love and attention, which is something she lacks. I'm curious to know if others thought the way he showed love and attention to Lizzie crossed a boundary? I think it was right on the brink. It was intriguing to watch the lens Lizzie placed upon Evie's kidnapping experience. Lizzie's need to idealize everything -- and the trauma that Evie experienced -- was ultimately the end of their closeknit chhildhood bond. At the same time, Lizzie was not able to see Dr. Aiken's good qualities. This is the sort of book that leaves you haunted to know what happens? Those who seem good were bad. Some of those who seem neutral were good. And some of those who were bad had good attributes. Like real life, there isn't a tidy ending.

A little heavy on the philosophical ramblings toward the end, but overall a touching story that inspires optimism and hope and encourages the reader to follow her/his dreams. Very quick read.

Though the first chapter is frustrating because of the wrap-around plot, this truly lives up to the "classic" category.
Another great addition to the Thursday Famiily of books. I know these aren't for everybody, but I love them.
