Angelou's clear-cut emotional style of writing empowers any reader. Although disturbing at times, Maya is able to select those instances in her life which translated into the greatest long term impact and meaning. It is evident that Angelou takes a stand on feminism and racial empowerment, and through an account of her triumphs and travails she engenders hope for the downtrodden. Although this was a heartfelt presentation of fact, Maya creates an aura of heroism that cannot be duplicated. Maya tells the reader her story in the hope that others will learn from it, but circumstances change. Definitely her life is unique and stands as a beacon of integrity - and duly deserves appreciation. But to say the life of one woman among thousands, millions of others causes revolutionary change in social psyche? Not likely. This is a difficult read for those sensitive indivuals touchy about issues concerning poverty, oppression, and social isolation.

I read this way way back in the sixties and promptly became an Anya Seton fan.(I also happen to be descended from one of Katherine's illegitimate children!) I love Seton's ability to blend well-researched historical fact with romantic imagination, all set amidst interesting events, such as the Black Death.

this is also one of my favorite authors. He is bicultural, japanese and british, and does an amazing job capturing the cultural similarities in his stories and characters.

I am just not a big Melville fan...I can appreciate what he was doing, but it doesn't make me like it.
This book is an amazing love story between Cody Gunner and a barrel racer who has cystic fibrosis. I loved this book becasue it was full of passion. I felt like the author really knew these people and she expressed her feelings.

a fun, very imaginative and well written bed time story for grownups.
I was good with merely reading the first two books in this series; this last volume had beautiful artwork but the storyline was pretty disjointed and jumped around. Also, sex with enemies for the sake of sex: I'm neutral on that for a revenge story. If you read this manga with a vengeful soundtrack in the background, you may appreciate it more than I did.
My professor called this book "one of the best novels ever constructed". I'm not sure I want to give it that sort of distinction, but I do think it is worthy of being talked about in that manner. I'm ready and willing to call this thing a masterpiece. Not that I'd recommend it to anyone in particular; it is wildly sexual and profoundly disturbing. The text itself, however, is good enough and takes power enough from those things (they are not just added on, as, I suspect, most of the crap in Phillip Roth is) that it needs no other justification: this book is a fantastic example of successful postmodern writing, of Faulknerian character development, and of flat-out story telling. It's also a ghost story, a detective story, and a love story. Doesn't get a whole lot better.
