شهریار سخن. احساس در ایشان غوغا می­کند، همچو آسمان است، گاه شاد است با رنگ و نگین فیروزه، گاهی با ابرهای سپید شیرین عسلی می­لولد، و گاه نیز ابری تیره و تار، می­غرد و نعره می­کشد و سیل می­باراند، رودخانه­ها به راه می­اندازد، طوفان می­شود، با سیل همراه، از کوه سرازیر، و سرریز می­کند. اما هرچه صدای غرشش، مثل سیل یا رعد و برق، بلند باشد، برایم انگار موسیقی­ست، سمفونی­های بتهوون است، که در آن­ها هم، نوای سازهای زهی گاه بلند است. شعر شهریار پرشور است و نفس­گیر و گوشنواز. روح را نمی­آزارد. به اندیشه وامی­دارد. تا بگوید: «انسان اولان، خنجر بلینه تاخماز». مرا یاد بهشت می­اندازد، که از آن رانده شدم. انگار در آن باغ خدایی، با شعر ایشان به گشت و گذارم. بی غم دنیا و ما فیها، بی­نیاز بی­نیاز. این توان شاعر زاده­ی دیار ماست. شهریار سخن، شاعری­ست به کمال و تمام معنی. شاید حافظ خوشه­چینی باشد به گفته­ی خود حافظ، که مرواریدهای واژه­ها را چنان برگزیده و برچیده، که انگار، گردن­آویزی برای ملکه­های پرشکوه و جلال این جهان ساخته است، اما آن گردن­آویز حافظ را نه ملکه­ها که شمایان و خوانش­گران زیب و زینت گردن خویش می­کنید و می­کنند. اما حافظ، هرگز شغلش شاعری نبود. شهریار حتی از شغل طبابت و پزشکی، و عشق خویش نیز، به خاطر شعر بگذشت. دل سوخته بود. با تمام معنی واژه­ی دل­سوخته. آهای دل سوخته به چند؟ الماس کوه نورت می­فروشی؟ دریای نورت را به دریای واژه­های پارس قرض می­دهی؟ کوهستان حیدر بابایت چند می­ارزد که نفروختی. به هیچ قیمتی نفروختی. نه به سپید نه به زرد. رایگان به نسیم سپردی، که با باد هرجایی، هرجایی برود. دستی به زلف یار، دستی به شاخ نار. گل بوته­ها را نوازش کند، به نوای جویبارها، گوش جان بسپارد. آن گاه، آهنگی زیبا به صدای هوهوی خود اضافه کند، تا به گوش همه برساند آن پیام آهنگین: «من سنین تک، داغا سالدیم نفسی، سن ده قایتار، گویلره سال بو سسی، بایقوشوندا دار اولماسین قفسی، بوردا بیر شـِر(شیر) داردا قالیب، باغیریر، مورووتسیز، اینسان­لاری چاغیریر». احمد شربیانی

My only question is when will I find the time to finish off the series?

It is Michelle Alexander's experience as a lawyer which makes this such a successful piece. It is not novelty that makes this book so profound, but the authority upon which the argument is made: simple statistics and inarguable facts. In the very beginning, Mrs. Alexander states for whom this book was written: people who have a hard time convincing friends, neighbors and others that there is something oddly familiar with the current order. She has done this perfectly and thus I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a hard time convincing others that the current state of Blackamerica is not due to a mortal/cultural flaw, but instead stems from a perfect storm of institutional control that perhaps was initially well-intended, but at present insist upon maintaining a status quo that has decimated the African-American community and is doing the same to our Latino brothers and sisters. I was both vindicated and saddened in finding evidence from a lawyer in confirmation of my understanding that the United States Supreme Court, particularly the current make-up, has been a friend to the political and economic elite of this country, an enemy to the politically impotent masses and a main obstacle against any meaningful change in society at large. It was both shocking and appauling to see that the chief justices in the land acknowledging the existence of corrosive racism that has become inherent in the criminal "justice" system, while refusing to do anything but maintain the status quo since the only viable solution would be to dismantle the system - something which they deemed impossible. Once we reach that level of protectionism by the very same institution that is supposed to be the ultimate check on executive and legislative authority, what is left but a complete overhaul of the system - dare I say "revolution"? The only criticism I have is that in her initial summary of the chapter contents, she seems to often have simply copied key sentences word for word, which is rather annoying, but minimal (and easily forgotten). Stylistically, it made for a redundancy and the book perhaps would have been better off without any foreshadowing summaries at all (current and future authors take note). It has always been my person theory that most conspiracies are not concocted in smokey backrooms, but simply come into existence when particular interests converge and work towards the same goal in a previously established order. In short, what you have before you is the anatomy of just such a conspiracy and an uncomfortable reality that needs to be first acknowledged before we can ever begin to talk about social, racial and economic justice in the United States in any meaningful way.

WARNING: Ending details may follow Not being American and not being old enough to remember the Chappaquiddick incident involving Senator Ted Kennedy, I read this book with no prior knowledge of neither the real-life incident nor of the book depicting it. A close reading of the book tells me that it is a very good book, and learning more about the incident it depicts only makes that impression stronger. It's the first book by Joyce Carol Oates I've read, but I can definitely see myself developing a taste for more. Black Water is intriguing, it grabs you by the throat and threatens to drag you down with it. At times you find yourself gasping for air, almost paralyzed with claustrophobia, trapped inside the car on the bottom of the river, water rushing in, threatening to drown you along with the main character. And then, with unrelenting cruelty, Oates presents you with a slight shimer of impossible and improbable hope, that despite evidence of the contrary, Kelly might not drown after all. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it up to you to find out how it all ends. If you know about Chappaquiddick, you'll know how the story ends. Then again, perhaps having prior knowledge makes reading the book an even more chilling experience. For me it was chilling enough in its own right.

This was a fun quick read. My students probably like these books like I liked Judy Blume. However, I thought the main character was too boy obessed and too self-centered, and thus not as likeable as other young adult books I have read.
