This book tells what civil war in Sierra Leone looked like to a boy of 13 as he was recruited as a soldier after his family was killed by rebels. He witnessed war as no one should ever have to; a young boy caught in the middle of adult politics.

This book was recommended to me by quite a few people and there is even a movie version coming out soon. The book is written by a Portuguese author and translated into English. I am not sure if something was lost in translation or not but the book seemed to drag on and I forced myself to finish it. I think the ending was supposed to be philosophical but at that point I was just glad to be finished. His writing style was such that he used run on sentences and page long paragraphs for effect.... hmmm...

Another one I picked up from a dusty shelf in a tiny mexican town, so appropriate for Mexican road trips

An African American living in a city during the 1950s and his life. I thought that it had interesting points of views on things. I liked it because it did not take that much knowledge of Elizibeathen language. It surpassed my expectations, but not by a huge amount. Again, I had to read this for school.

Fun! I love archaeology so really appreciated that part and thought the characters were really well written.

I booktalked this to 8 classes of 7th graders and it was by far the hit of the group. Had over a dozen teens come to the library that day to request it! My parents had their problems, but as least they weren't as bad as the mother in this book! Accepting responsibility for your actions...a message we all need reminding of...and the horror of this book drives it home!

Joe Torre managed the Yankees and George Steinbrenner for 12 years and this book chronicles those years. It's a great story about how the Yanks were on top of the baseball world, but because of new dynamics in baseball the other teams, most notably the Red Sox caught up to them. The Yanks won four world series' with him and made the playoffs every year he was the manager. But, in the end he was shown the door. Whether you are a Yankee fan or a baseball fan, this book is a great read.
I kept switching between laughter, pity and shock at the way these children were raised. If true, this is an amazing account of the author's childhood and is excellent writing.
