This continues the story of Bean begun in Ender's Shadow. Bean is still an engaging character and I still maintain Card's writing is superior to a decade earlier. That said, this book is weighed down with a villain who is not terribly interesting or fleshed out, and Bean's wife, who is given nothing to do but whine about babies. It becomes clear that Card has nothing to write about women of use, which makes sense when he starts talking about his rather patriarchal religion in the back of the books, and wanting to write books for that audience. It doesn't make for very compelling characters however.

yet it ends horribly. The most spineless male protagonist(who is really the antagonist for most of the play), matched with a strong yet terribly self-effacing & self-sacrificing female protagonist who really, really loves this jerk. Makes me wince. Not a funny comedy, except for the fool (not the jester).

This was a very interesting look at her young start in vaudeville and theater. She had an extremely difficult time as a teenager when she lived by herself while appearing in shows. But when she was home she was the caretaker for her siblings because her parents were absent alcoholics. But she remains upbeat throughout and there are very interesting sections where she discusses her Broadway shows in some detail, how she kept her voice working through a grueling schedule, anecdotes about her co-stars, and lively descriptions about lots of famous people. It was a fun book and very informative in the whole process of putting on a show from an actor's point of view.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Miss Havisham is one of the all-time great fictional characters.
