Reading this book was like having a prolonged, but interesting, conversation with Lionel Abel as he reminisced about his personal experiences in the world of the intelligentsia from 1929 on. From the outset, I tried to learn as much as conveniently possible about the people with whom he was acquainted, but had to abandon that effort as it was becoming too burdensome. I suspect this book would be much more enjoyable to readers already familiar with the intellectual elite of that period. Some of his anecdotes brought back vivid memories of my own aspirations while coming of age in the late 1970s and early 1980s - back when I thought I was part of a movement powerful and unique, while worriedly awestruck by events in the larger world (i.e., Reaganism and a renewed fervor for American exceptionalism). Unlike Abel's acquaintances, though, I don't think any of mine have gone on to be some of the most recognized names in leftist politics, literature, or art. I learned of this memoir from the bibliography of David Lehman's The Last Avant-Garde: The making of the New York School of Poets.

rab a box of tissues and steal away some place for a couple of hours, cause once you start reading this book you won’t want to put it down and I guarantee you won’t finish without a few tears. This story is poignant and amazing. Corine Ransom lived a life filled with challenges and tragedy, yet the overall theme of the book is hope. The back of the book says: “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you” is a story about triumph, perseverance, and overcoming. This biography of Corine Ransom, written by her daughter in first person, tells a story of women who experienced all that life had to offer. Tragedy, love, excitement, terror, and mystery. From escaping a cult after being beaten, raped and starved, to discovering her husband was a con man, to finally marrying the man of her dreams, to losing two daughters in death, (just to name a few experiences) yet always maintaining her faith in God and rising above it all being a constant survivor. Corine’s life story if one that needs to be heard, applauded, and admired. She is a hero. “ The book reads like a Lifetime movie. I was so engrossed I could hardly tear myself away. I read all but the last 20 pages in the first sitting.

Could. Not. Put. It. Down! The story of a celebrated opera singer, born to a deaf mother in a belfry high in the Swiss Alps. Shaped by the bells' glorious music, he discovers his extraordinary gift for sound. So many tragedies, yet he triumphs. I love this story about Moses Froben, world-renowned musico, who raised a son who by all rights he could never have sired.
Wise Children. “Hope for the best, expect the worst.” The motto of Grandma Chance, the guardian of the central characters in Angela Carter’s final novel. Written as a memoir by one woman from a pair of twin sisters, this story follows the history of a family of actors over the course of nearly a century. It contains many witty observations on the thespian trade, and the journey to the “wood” is one of the funniest commentaries on the film-making business that I have read in a long time. If you like your old ladies in an Alan Bennett flavour, you’ll enjoy this. At first, the memoirs were a little linear: this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened. I felt like I was reading a memoir written like a seven year old, and was indeed expecting the worst. The story is like a play in three acts. The first act sets some scenes, introduces us to the characters, and raises a few giggles, although the family tree feels a little too complicated to keep up with. The middle act builds up the pace, the life stories start to twist and turn, intertwining in one direction and then casting off in tangents. The last third is read in one fail swoop, the story develops into farce, and the one-liners become sharper and fiercer. By the end, somewhat exhausted, the loose ends are tied up and an encore is performed. The audience gives a standing ovation: yes or no? –ish. Very –ish. Ok, I enjoyed some of the observational humour; Angela Carter had obviously put in considerable effort to honing and fine-tuning the characterisations. But, apart from the comedy value, this book irritated me. I just wanted to leave this family of thesp’s to their own self-induced, self-absorbed demise. I didn’t want to hear anymore about the long-lost Uncle blah-blah, who you just KNOW is going to make a late entry and save the day. Irritated. But perhaps that’s the point? Is this what a satire on familial generations of actors should be like? A tad too lovey; a smidgen too much Ra-de-bloody-da perhaps (the joke is in the story, I promise you). I have to stop now before I start to ad lib. I’ll leave you to make up your own mind about Grandma Chance’s motto. For the laughs: four stars For the story: two stars Overall: three stars (but only because of the fine observational humour)

The author really brings Marley to life. I think this book will be appreciated most by dog owners, (doesn't matter if they're owners of labs or another breed.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Knowing nothing about the chinese culture, I was fascinated not only about the culture but the relationship of the sisters. I'm looking forwards to listening to the sequel.

This was a really good read and I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for a few slow parts and a couple of other confusing ones. The ending is wonderful.
