A great collection of short stories

Nope. Wasn't one of Meg's best IMO. The subject intrigued me-- stay-at-home with the kids or pursue a career -and all the guilt trips ,questions and moral dilemnas that go with either path taken. Didn't do it for me. Maybe because this subject has been done to death?

For a Sociology of African Americans class, we had to do five glorified book reports; this was a sixth for extra credit. Obviously, I 4.0ed the class, but we had some radical discussions for our troubles.

I haven't finished it yet but it definitely has an unusual intensity. Pieces of it remind me of my own family; the smart and passionate part...

A very clear analysis of 4 post-colonial works of Canadian fiction (including for my own purposes, Joy Kogawa and SKY Lee). Darias-Beautell engages both Derrida and Foucault to unravel the (con)textual and (inter)textual influences in Asian Canadian writing. With a firm focus on textuality, Darias-Beautell excavates the historical, political and cultural circumstances that are in dialogue with the plot. The intertextuality analysis was a fascinating look at how the tone/and structure of Lee's novel are engaging pop culture (romance novels and melodramatic cinema) and cultural elements of Chinese opera to create a counter cultural statement. Using the book for an essay on SKY Lee's Disappearing Moon Cafe. Great explanations. Concise and well organized.

a lovely little fable full of goodness. I sadly did not find it to be motivating, but instead felt like a loser for not finding my fortune in Egypt. hahaha! I still liked it, though.
Before I started Evernight, I was warned that the first 100 or so pages were just setting up the book AND that something odd will happen in the middle that will actually start the novel. Yea, I can see how people might say that. Let me just say that the part where the novel actually starts...TOTALLY surprised me. I was like: wtf?! I mean, in the beginning, there was absolutely no mention about vampires or anything. But then, all of sudden, right in the middle of the book, bam! Vampires were suddenly everywhere. Totally weird and unexpected. And it's weird how Bianca made no mention about her vampire parents but instead, just went on and talked about how they liked teaching and stuff. Then, after the breakthrough, she talks about how her parents had always told her from when she was young that she would be a vampire. And she drinks blood everyday. I mean, can you mention that a little ahead of time? It totally messed my brain up. Anyway, what I did like about the book were some of the characters such as Vic. He's so damn funny and totally laid back. I mean, I just love his character and personality. Such a friendly and out-going guy. Bianca, well, honestly, I can't really say much about her. I feel like she's still a mysterious character so hopefully the next book will take a better look into her life. Balthazar is, omg, one of the friendliest [is that word?:] guy I ever read about. He's awesome and nice to everyone despite their "status". Lucas has anger issues. He's easily angered and when he is angered, he blows up in fights. However, I guess his history and background has something to do with it. I just don't really like how he seems to blow up and goes out of his way to annoy people. For the relationship between Lucas and Bianca, I feel like it's..premature. It's like, they've only known for each other a few months but then they're in love? It's pretty skeptical and unrealistic. Overall, Evernight was an entertaining book but I hope that Stargazer can pick things up.
Everyone loves a good laugh and that's just what Helen Fielding delivers with this romp in the spirit of Tom Jones, with a feminist perspective . . . maybe! Bridget's obsession with her calories, her boss, her clothes and heaven knows what went unchronicled make this one of the funnier British imports of the day. My download had a smashing narrator & that improved the romp immeasurablly!

Good for the beach. Kind of drifts away from the title character.
what's there not to like about a writer that once said, "writing is like prayer; you sit and listen for the still small voice"? this book is really short, but really packs a punch. in the words of simon cowell, 1 million percent yes.
