This went down much easier as an audiobook - although now that I know the story, I might try reading it for real again someday. A note on the librivox recording: the reading was pretty uneven, some of it to the point of being distractingly bad. Quotable: "But that intimacy of mutual embarrassment, in which each feels that the other is feeling something, having once existed, its effect is not to be done away with. Talk about the weather and other well-bred topics is apt to seem a hollow device, and behavior can hardly become easy unless it frankly recognizes a mutual fascination—which of course need not mean anything deep or serious."

I could not read it at night because it has many violent scenes. Joan goes after knowledge and the setting is in medieval times. Why are the descriptions of medieval life so harsh in this book?Is it to make the plot more exciting? Does the author want to show us that we are soft and spoiled? or she wants to make Joan's accomplishments more impressive considering the risks she took? This book might be controversial. Is it why it had not been turned into a movie yet? It was very engaging. I recommend it.

Even though she seems more mature than her twelve years of life, especially since a decade of them was spent on an isolated farm, I easily overlooked that as I got caught up in Lilia’s grand adventure. I recommend A True Princess for mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged eight to 12.

Caution: Do NOT read this book if: 1. You are terrified of anything doomsday 2. Have hoarding or food storage issues 3. Are a worrier of any kind Set in Pennsylvania, this story is about a girl named Miranda and her family as they struggle for survival after the Moon is tipped out of it's usual orbit by a freak collision with an asteroid. When I say struggle for survival, I mean it. Although I tend to like fiction like this, I had a hard time because this one seemed to eerily possible. It also seemed so real due to the fact that you are reading Miranda's diary as the events unfold. It was painfully hard to read a few times because I felt as if I really knew her half way through and couldn't stand the thought of anything like this happening to anyone I loved. Still, with that being said, I couldn't put it down. Ultimately, it's a very intimate tale of fear, doubt, survival and hope. It did, however, make me want to go buy water barrels...

The book had a lot of possibilities, but it didn't really fulfill them. The end seemed rushed and some of the main characters seemed suddenly to act out of character. The things that had happened to them just didn't seem like enough to explain their actions. Basically, I wouldn't really recommend this book. It was disappointing reading. There was so much more he could have done with it.

I really enjoyed the disjointed and circling narrative Morrison creates in A Mercy. While many of my classmates found this latest novel frustrating and incomplete, I was moved by the various depictions of bondage imposed by the self or an other.
