I've been sitting here, at my keyboard, for close to 20 minutes trying to come up with the right words for this review. The one thought that keeps popping into my head is that I don't like apathetic characters. The protagonist of A Wild Sheep Chase is totally apathetic, mired in his own overdeveloped and carefully cherished sense of mediocrity. If the characters don't care about themselves and their lives, then why should I? I was excited to read Murakiami after a glowing review from a good friend and a printed review that compares him to one of my favorite authors, Tom Robbins. While the sense of magic realism and the absurd is certainly shared between the two authors, Robbins' characters have passion and drive and interest. To be cliche, if you were to cut them, they would bleed. Murakami's characters ... not so much. They are as terse, pallid and blank as his prose. Perhaps this is part of a Japanese aesthetic that I am missing out on? Either way, Murakami left me feeling as "meh" as his characters.

Always fun to have a class where the professor hates the textbook...

I can see why it was groundbreaking, but I think that it's status as a "classic" book is only because of the writing style. The story isn't that great and although I know the language was supposed to be edgy, I found it slightly offensive. I view this book as one of those that has it's place in literature because of what it did to change the world of writing when it was published, by the book itself is not that good.

This book just did nothing for me. I finished it, but mostly just to see if it got any better. It tells the story of the garden as if it is a character, so you hear about 200+ years of people who live in and around the garden. Their stories are almost meaningless compared with the garden... and the ending was not good.

A great book on how to organize and "be" the body of Christ in the 21st century. Every church leader should read this book.

Of mice and Men review Well what I said about the book mice and men, at first I didn’t think I was going to like it. But you know what it’s been better then like, I loved this book. Now it’s not my favorite stories but it’s a book that I don’t mind reading again. It had action, Great characters and something that most stories don’t have which is connection to every reader. Even thought it has real sad ending but happy telling of the story it gives readers a life lesson and makes very good point. The story tells of two friends name Lennie and George. They have to different personalities and some how they work well together. These two friends always find themselves in trouble or running away from it. When story first begins Lennie and George are on their way to go to work on a ranch and on the pervious job they just got out of trouble. On this ranch they meet a lot of characters that will influence there actions most of them life change and others changes will be painful to watch or even read. One major part in of Mice and men that is life changing to many would have to be the killing of Curelys wife, it may not sound like much but when Killing happens it cause a lot of plans to come crumbling down. Such as Lennie and George’s dreams of owning a farm in living off the fat of the land, or candy have future and not dying alone and unhappy. Or the fact that Lennie and George friends had to end after all time that they spent together. The Interesting thing about this book is that about almost every character had a story to tell. Plus every character was unhappy and somehow had they hopes and dreams destroy. Cruely’s wife she wanted to be famous and be in movies but her plans change when meeting Cruley. Now her misfortune lead her living on a ranch with no friends, family and no life. Then you have Candy he is old, alone and no money his plan was to live with Lennie and George and live off the fat of he land. So as the story goes, almost no one is meant to be happy and Candy finds that out through very shortly. Surprisingly there was one person that was happy, which was Slim because he didn’t have plans or try to make any because he had what he wanted. Most importantly through he just took life as it came. What I really liked about this book was the Symbols and the Motifs. One symbol would be when Lennie gets a new puppy. The puppy is supposed to mean a new hope, a dream to believe and a start of a new life. Unfortunately when that puppy is killing by Lennie that dream and a new life starts to crumble in the matter of seconds Then it’s the mofit the book which seems to be the root of the story and whole plot. Remember how Lennie and George gets into trouble well the reason are because his likes to soft things and women. Therefore it wouldn’t be long before Lennie finds himself in trouble again, and turns Him, Georges and candy’s future right back where started. To me this story had adventure, great characters and great theme that taught life lesson. If I had to rate this on scale 1-10 and 10 being the highest if would have to be 9.It would only be a 9 because of the sad ending. The ending effected lot characters and not in good a way. However the life lesson is very true and effective to people everywhere. The lesson is that all plans of mice and men go wrong, which simply means that you never really can make plans because something will go wrong and make those plans to change. Almost every character had plans that change in this favorable tale of two Best friends.

...Like previous books by Le Guin I've read, I found The Lathe of Heaven a thought-provoking read. Like with The Dispossessed I needed some time to process what I'd just read. Its a short work by today's standards but a pretty intense read. One than made me wonder why on earth I hadn't read more by this author long ago. This book is rightfully considered a classic of the genre. It's forty years old by now but it aged more gracefully than many of its contemporaries. To me, it feels like a book that will continue to find new readers. In fact, I recommend you give it a try. Full Random Comments review

i may be up for hanging because of this, but i don't think david sedaris is all that funny or engaging. he is just not my cup of tea, although he seems to be everyone else and their mama's cups of tea.
I found this 'classic' slow and distasteful. I could not identify with any of the characters and did not like a single one, except for possibly Mr. Lockwood, whom the story is being told to. The one redeeming quality was the death of the 'hero,' that his charges may have peace.
