I left this biography with very mixed feelings. I enjoyed the insight into Walker, but I felt in places that it was too hagiographic. I don't enjoy reading biographies that are ultimately hatchet jobs, but I felt like Walker was presented in such glowing terms that some of her humanity was lost. I was very interested in the description of her childhood in Georgia and particularly the aftermath of the scarring accident she suffered. By the time the book gets to her adulthood, however, she became less and less real to me because she seemed to be presented as infallible. In spite of that, I think this marks a very real contribution to the work on Walker, and I look forward to seeing others build upon it.

I never read any of the Chronicles of Narnia when I was younger. For some reason I thought it was more science fiction than fantasy. I really enjoyed reading all 7 of the stories.

I would have been a lot more impressed with this book had it not built, and built, and built, and then left you hanging with a big, fat to be continued. Come on! Just because a book is in a series doesn't mean you just leave people hanging in the middle of it so you can sell another book.

I loved this book! read most of it in one day when I was *supposed* to be doing other things. The characters in this one cuold be real people dealing with real problems, and that is something I really like in contemporaries (series or otherwise). I loved that both the hero and heroine had tough things to face and neither one got off easy. they both had to change and grow and take a chance, and I don't always find that in romance. the secondary characters were awesome and an integral part of the story. I hope that some of them get their own stories in the future, there are two I would really like to see play out. The conflicts the hero, in particular, had to deal with weren't linked just to the heroine, but other events that had happened in his life. He had to come home and face things and be a grown up for the first time. We saw more than one side of the hericne, more than she showed in her daily life running the ranch and there was such emotion in seeing her go through those events, events that put her in a position so different that her 'normal' days.

I approached this book with some hesitation. When outsiders go in, and attempt to write about the inside, I hesitate. But I read through this (quickly, I might add--the writing is easy, conversational, and fluid that way) and truly appreciated the perspective for what it was. Giridharadas does not attempt to be an insider; he recognizes where he is from (America), that he is on a journey to (not BACK to) India, and that he is writing about his own observations about a nation in some turmoil. In many ways, it resonated with my own experience of "returning" to India several times over the past decade, usually to live/volunteer/do seva. In the process, my own visits led to observations of the rapidly changing landscape of a country so fortified in her religious, cultural and social roots. I found myself laughing several times throughout the book, usually during moments of the author's own keen observations of that ever-present confident "undertone" that seems to pervade so many Indians' voices and thoughts. All in all, a good read, and definitely a commendable first book for such a young/new author.

I'm going to say that the first thing I did upon completing this book is order "The Broken Kingdoms" so in that regard I guess It was a good book. Also I completed it in less than 4 days so again generally a marker that I enjoyed it very much. That all said I had some issues. **SPOILERS COMING** First of all the book seems to set you up for great political scheming or military strategy yet never delivers on either. Next I kind of felt cheated out of getting to know this world. The book *feels* like its created this great world. Yet we only leave sky for a brief period of time. Next complaint would be the use of flashbacks to tell the story. This may not have anything to do with Jemisin's use though because I just think its a *very* over used plot device in general. Although I think there were times where it was clever. I'm not convinced that it really added anything to the story. it was a very *predictable* story I thought. Which leaves me with my most important criteria for deciding if a book was good or not, characterization. Again here I feel cheated. it almost seems like we were promised a book about gods and yet only a handful appear in the book. Of those that do I think only two were fully fleshed out. In fact that's my biggest complaint in the entire book I think only three characters are completely fleshed out. But the three that are, are so well done that I want to draw more from the author. Nahadoth and Sieh are two of the best characters I've ever read, and although I didn't like and couldn't relate to Yeine, I did think she was well crafted. its hard for me to speak of this book without wanting to compare it with Jacqueline Carey, or Tanith Lee's work. The problem is its not really strong enough for that to be fair. The fact that I want to means I'll be keeping my eye on this author though.
