I love good writing, and Franzen's an amazing writer - but reading this book reminded me that good writing isn't enough in and of itself to carry a novel. This would be a much better novel if there were less of it. Parts of it are great, but way too much of the text is repetitious or pointless - a waste of the reader's time and attention.

I didn't realize that three stars means I liked a story. I've been giving out so many 4 and 5 stars over the past year that when I finish a book and I just *liked it* I'm a bit disappointed. Look, here's my issue: I didn't know what the hell everyone was talking about most of the time. I enjoy a challenging novel, I really do. I've read plenty of Charles Stross, Greg Egan, Rudy Rucker, and recently even got through - and enjoyed - Count to a Trillion, by John Wright recently. All really tough to understand what's going on at times. But this thing, it was page after page of things that I had a tough time following. I think I more or less figured out the larger story, and had my finger of the the various political factions and such, but damn, it kept me on my toes, I really had to stay focused on what was happening. And it was worth it in the end. It wasn't quite a home run for me, as I was still a bit confused when I finished the final page, it was still good enough that I think I'm going to read the second installment that just came out.

This book features a creepy, perhaps untrustworthy narrator. It was incredibly easy to get into and read quickly. I enjoyed her use of language, and the story was intriguing. I look forward to seeing how it was adapted into a screenplay in the movie.

Pretty good, but she should have condensed the part when she was at Cascade and made the last part of the book longer. She just blasts through the Club Kid days after Cascade and is miraculously recovered in a few chapters

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every girl must occasionally read fun frivolous girly books. Equally true, every great author needs to write them. Shannon Hale, author of The Goose Girl, a fantastic book, has written a delicious, indulgent, smart, and surprisingly genuine girly book. Jane Hayes, graphics designer, is obsessed with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy (in a ashamed, hide-the-dvd-in-her-plants kind of way). To cure her of this, her great aunt Caroline bequeaths Jane a trip to Pembrook Park, a Jane Austen resort where women go to live in the world of Austen, surrounded by actors (specifically gentleman actors) to play the parts of Austen-like heroes: the brooder, the jovial rake, the common-man-turned-successful-sea-captain). Jane struggles with the dichotomy (real or not real?), and feels like a desperate, sad, ridiculous women, but then, things begin to turn around. Is she deluding herself, as always, or is she being offered something real in Austenland. DAMN, this book was surprisingly good. I swear, I came home today and read the entire thing in one sitting (minus a chapter or two yesterday). It was so refreshing after reading books where I care about style and serious things. It was like exfoliating! Scrubbing off the slough of academia and large fantasy tomes to revel in a little bubble bath. And yet, this book surprised me with it's depth. Yes, the plot is predictable, so is the plot of almost any romantic comedy. I began with the book at arms length, judging Jane for fangirling, and the being weirdly ashamed about it. But as the story continued I was sucked in, and became totally invested in her story, squeeing and crying out in emotional agony at the appropriate moments. This is a must have for anyone who a) has the Austen fever and b) has ever fantasized about being swept off your feet by the guy of your dreams in a romantic setting. I'm looking at all of you, ladies. PS: Austen resorts really exist.

My little sister turned me onto this book. At first I was hesitant but found its a GREAT stress release tool! My favorite activity was cutting the page with a sharp knife cause my father walks into the room, looked at me with a knife to my book, then slowly backed out of the room. Classic. Good times.

Don't let the crappy movie with Norton and Hopkins scare you off. This is an amazing and engrossing book. It's the first book featuring the Hannibal Lecter character and it will suck time away from you. It's not the comic book the last two books turn into. One of the books I recommend most highly.
On the whole quite good. The essays range from amazing to pretty good. There's a lot of experimenting with form here which for the most part works well. Even when it doesn't quite do more than just be an interesting experiment, well.. at least it is an interesting experiment. He also seems to have a knack knowing when to wrap up a clever idea before it overwhealms the piece.
A captivating detective story with an unpredictable outcome
