Light in plot, but I enjoyed reading about the life of a firefighter.
Let's face it, this book isn't likely to change your mind from where you're at politically, but it provides a fine balance of humor, politics and social commentary on the state of the media that's worth looking at.
When this book first came out i didn't realize it was gong to be a 4 book saga, I was extremely excited when i learned that there were 3 others and a movie coming!

I didn’t want to read this book. I have other books that pull at me and have closer publication dates. I thought I’d read the first few pages to see if it was any good, and it pulled me in. I couldn’t stop reading. The writing technique isn’t great, but the story telling is. The story: (view spoiler) This is a standard dystopian young adult story. The world building is pretty well done, characterization is fair. It is obviously part of a series because we are left dangling at the end, and yet, it is a decent enough story that I kept reading.
Kind of weird... not something I would read again! Why are so many people obsessed with it?
I was waiting for this book with baited breath- I had read a short story by Libba Bray and fell in love! This is a great book! When beauty queens get stranded on a island what can go wrong? Just about everything- I loved the characters and the satire that Ms Bray uses with her characters, I felt it brought them to life and made each a new fresh fun character to read about. I am not off the read the rest of Libba Bray's work- check out this author- she is one to watch

I enjoyed this book better than the first- quite a page turner.
** spoiler alert ** About what I expected. Formulaic but fun and enjoyable. The premise (hippy commune kid thrown into modern society's middle school environment) was interesting, but I found it unfortunate that the author felt compelled to portray the 'community' as a hippy 60's throwback that was dysfunctional and wierd. Although the main character "Cap" really did bring some of the more positive values of his upbringing into the middleschool (peacemaking, meditation, honesty, sharing), it was generally written about in a mocking or negative way. To be honest, after reading the novel, as a parent with a 3-year old, I'd rather have my son grow up sheltered like Cap was, in a caring community practicing sustainable living, than the 'modern' society that the middle school seemed to reflect. Anyhow the ending... meh. I won't ruin it but to say it seemed kinda tacked on at the last minute and really ruined the book for me.
