The Black Girl Next Door: A Memoir, by Jennifer Baszelle is a touching story about a black girl growing up in the 70's and 80's. At an early age, Jennifer, her parents and sister Natalie moved to a predominately white neighborhood in Palos Verdes, CA. Her parents had only wanted the best for their daughters, but growing up at that time with white classmates was not always easy. For example, at the age of six , after winning a foot race against a white classmate, the author was humiliated to hear her classmate explain that the reason she won the race was because black people "have something in their feet to make them run faster than white people". When Jennifer asked her teacher about this, the teacher said it was true! When she asked her parents the same question, they were stunned and the next morning, Jennifer's father accompanied her to school, careful to "assert himself as an informed and concerned parent and not simply a big, black, dangerous man in a first-grade classroom.". An apology was given by the teacher, however, comments like this pretty much set the tone for her grade school years, which left her often with feelings of isolation . Having excelled in school, her parents pushed her and her sister to believe in and to live the American dream. Sometimes defying her parents, but through self-determination, success followed as the author became the first black female History professor at Yale. An interesting memoir, candid, and inspirational, although a bit slow in places, gave me real insight as to how it might have felt to be Jennifer growing up in the post Civil Rights 70's and 80's.
This is the first of the Burn Notice novels and, from what I've read, also the best. It fits the tone and style of the show to a tee. Good plot, too, which sometimes can't really be said for the later books in the series.

I have never cringed so much while reading a book. And I don't mean cheap cringes like you'd get from reading about an awkward adolescence, I mean serious, serious shrinking of the soul, some of it sympathetic and some not. What a horrific setup for a hugely cathartic ending. Nothing can match Bird's surreal and overblown fear of the "monstrous" infant or his self-loathing, so the ending is marked not by happiness and resolution but by a return to normalcy. Of sorts.
I loved the first two-thirds of this novel. It isn't perfect in any way, but the characters are mostly likable and interesting, and I was even willing to accept the supernatural aspect of the book. But then things get crazy, like a badly thought out Stephen King story. by the end, I was rushing to finish, not because I had any remaining interest, but rather just to be done and to confirm that it was going to end exactly the way I thought it would. It's too bad, really, that the author lost track of her characters and couldn't provide a more satisfying conclusion for them.

Crais is one of my favorite authors for action-packed, fun loving, figure it out detective stories. Elvis Cole (main character of his own Crais series) is my hero! Demolition Angel is my all time favorite.
I won this book from goodreads. It was a very enjoyable and compelling read, although a bit slow at the beginning. I found the politics difficult to follow at times. It was also sometimes confusing as there are so many characters and they are referred to in different ways, by first name or title. However, the story drew me in and then I didn't want to put it down, hence the four stars. **spoiler alert** I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I had hoped Violante would finally get her own life to live. I was annoyed with her for not grasping a chance at happiness when she could.

A classic, I read this in seventh grade. I remember reading the whole thing, which is impressive for someone who drank 1 liter of coke a day and watched 5 hours of TV. I think there was a cartoon with a spider named charl... I have been informed thats a different book.

I personally didn't like this book because of the layout the author organized this book in. I think the plot was kind of off a little bit, but the ending was triumphant and graceful.
