While not particularly accurate in any way and confirming the stereotype of Japan as "Fujiyama and Geisha", it is nonetheless a good read. The tale takes us through an entire lifetime and feels complete at the end. One that I can read over and over again.

I first read this in the summer of 2002, when I was binging on all of John Irving's books. When I joined goodreads 5 years later, I only gave this 2 stars. What was I thinking?! I feel like four year old Ruth Cole is looking at me, perplexed, asking, "Why did you did what you did?" This is beautiful and funny and delightful and much happier than I remembered, and I loved it. I'm upping it to the full 5 stars now and am so pleased to have reread it.

تک پرده ای "نگاهی از پل" یا "چشم اندازی از پل" یک تراژدی مدرن است. در اواخر دهه ی چهل شمسی، حمید سمندریان این نمایش نامه را با بازی هنرجویان دانشکده ی تیاتر، در تالار هنرهای زیبا روی صحنه آورد. نمایش نامه به نام "چشم اندازی از پل" توسط "م. امین موید" به فارسی برگردانده شده و در 1342 منتشر شده است در سال های اوائل دهه ی چهل، یک آقای آمریکایی در دانشکده ی ادبیات بود (پروفسور کویین بی؟) که گویا ادبیات انگلیسی درس می داد، و برخی از آثار تنسی ویلیامز و آرتور میللر را در تالار فردوسی دانشکده روی صحنه آورد، شاید هم بانی تاسیس گروه تیاتر دانشگاه تهران بود. "باغ وحش شیشه ای" از تنسی ویلیامز، و "نگاهی از پل" از آرتور میللر را با اجرای گروه تیاتر دانشگاه و کارگردانی همین آقای "کویین بی" به یاد دارم. این نمایش نامه با ترجمه ی حسن ملکی در مجموعه ی انتشارات "نسل قلم" در 1380 هم منتشر شده است. Most of Arthur miller’s plays such as “A View from the Bridge”, “The Crucible”, “All My Sons”, “Death of a Salesman” etc. are categorized as modern tragedies; the struggles of the everyday man; social American tragedies, focusing on the dark side of the American dream. “All my Sons” is a classic play, about guilt, responsibility, and the relationship between fathers and sons in the aftermath of a World War II corruption case, when two brothers come together to dispose of their parents' estate, their divergent attitudes and dispositions become increasingly accentuated: “Price”. Exploring the intersection between one man's self-delusion and the brutal trajectory of fate: (A View from the Bridge). Revealing the Salem witch trials of the late seventeenth century and the problem of guilt by association, but placed the outrage of McCarthyism in historical perspective: (The crucible). An anguished consideration of mortality and the gulf between men and women: (Elegy for a lady). Re-creating Dante's hell inside the gaping pit that is our history and populates it with sinners whose crimes are all the more fearful because they are so recognizable: (Incident at Vichy). A darkly comic satirical allegory that poses the question; What would happen if Christ were to appear in the world today: (Resurrection blues). A casual, warm-spirited and innocuous musical chalk talk whose future is likely to reside with amateur church and synagogue theater groups: (Up from Paradise). So simple in style and so inevitable in theme, where Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their hope and anguish to the theatre: (Death of Salesman). A superb drama though Miller says; "…a love story between a man and his son, and... between both of them and America"! Though Miller’s works have always some social-political back ground in one or another way, but plays such as; “The archbishop’s ceiling” are referring directly to political issues (political situation in East Block in 1950’s and 60’s.) He has also plays which are less interesting; “A Memory of Two Mondays”, “Danger: Memory”; “I can’t remember anything”, “Clara”, “After the fall”, “Some kind of love story”, “The Last Yankee”, “Broken Glass”, “The Creation of the World and Other Business”, “The Ride Down Mount Morgan”, “American Clock”, etc.

i'm new to graphic novels and liked this one a lot. It reminded me a bit of the TV series Six Feet Under. After slodging through the interminable Pillars of the Earth recently I found myself admiring the wonderful economy of the graphic novel medium, how the story can be well and complexly told with the combination of pictures and words, especially when there are two streams of words - one about what's in the graphic box and another inside the box. This is a reader's book, too, a complex coming-of-age story of a lesbian daughter with a closeted bisexual father who teaches English and runs a funeral home, the whole narrated in large part with the help of literary classics that are important to the characters and their understandings of themselves, each other, their lives. Think I'll read more graphic novels
