This is not a review but briefly: if you want to learn something about the 1930s and the Great Depression—history that is highly instructive today—I cannot recommend this book enough.

So I admit I need to cut back on the girly books... This one is going back to Georgian England. Damaris is a pretty sympathetic heroine, all things considered, and most of the characters are decently interesting. The male romantic lead is the dashing gentleman with the terrible secret and the millitary past, who is able to redeem himself throughout the course of the book. She found shallow cupboards set into the walls of the coach containing a selection of drinks and amusements--cards; counters; boards and pieces for chess, drafts, and backgammon; a cribbage board; and a copy of Mr. Hoyle's rules for card games. Every eventuality provided for, including ignorance.

One of the first books I ever read by Fannie Flagg and it got me hooked on her style of writting!

Incredibly funny but pretty damn tragic. Karr tells a great story.

Ruby talks about all the crazy things she encounters on the way to school. Great for preschoolers. A little too long for toddlers.

I'm discovering that I definitely like a plucky heroine. Give me Kinsey Milhone, Cree Black, Anna Pigeon, Stephanie Plumb, even the sometimes-anxious Kate Scarpetta. They are strong women and I enjoy their adventures. Plain Jane had a lot going for it. It's a combination mystery, tragicomedy, love story, ghost story, dog story and more. But I found the whiny, insecure heroine to be annoying. I felt the same way about Eat, Pray, Love - so many good elements but if our heroine bursts into tears one more time it becomes tough to fight the impulse to gag. Jane Lewis is, astonishingly, a psychiatrist. I hope her true love, also a shrink, does give her a good dose of the therapy she so clearly needs. I think my next couple of books will be nonfiction - I need something solid to clear my head after this one!

In the end, I grew a bit weary of the author's style, but I was completely fascinated by the subject. Yet another (significant) piece of history that was left out of my school history books. I recommend this book, especially for those interested in maritime, Asian or world history.

This is readable military history at its best: the strategic and tactical are there and are comprehensible; the actors involved are real human beings, not flags on a map. The whole thing is done with tangible sympathy. Beevor is, in my view, on a par with more 'scholarly' historians - Michael Howard, John Keegan - and a world apart from the flag-waving crassness of Stephen Ambrose.
