A Curse Dark as Gold is a rich and beautiful reimagining of the Rumpelstiltskin tale. After her father’s death, Charlotte Miller finds herself responsible for the family woolen mill, as well as the small village of Stillwaters that depends on the mill’s success to survive. Charlotte faces looming debts, a meddlesome uncle, and an old family curse in her struggle to keep the mill running and in the family. From the mill itself to the small corn dollies the villagers use to ward off bad spirits, Charlotte’s world is described in detail so intricate it is impossible not to be swept away into this vivid fantasy. I was taken with this book before I even read the first page. Bunce's beautiful dedication to her husband is enough to make you fall in love with her on the spot. Luckily, the book that followed did not disappoint. This is one of those books that I really struggled with because I didn't want to put it down, but I didn't want to finish it too quickly, either. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys disappearing into beautiful yet threatening fantasy worlds, and savors the little things enough to stop and run a hand along the uneven stone walls just to see how they feel. ****UPDATE**** I just had the opportunity to met Ms. Bunce at a literacy conference, and she is as wonderful as her writing. She graciously signed two of her books for me as I gushed over her work like a silly fool.
