Oh. Where to start?! This book was a really great read. I loved the new take on the witches and the vampires, and oh dear, the love story behind it! This book had me in tears toward the end, and that is always a good sign that the book you just read, is going to be forever etched in your brain. From the action, to the dying questions you had about Ana, and the romance! I found it hard to put this book down once I picked it up. I love it when a book can grab you from the first chapter. Not only does that let you know you are in for a great ride, but you waste no time falling in love/hate with the characters you are reading about. From Ana, a Grey Eye heir, which she knows nothing about until a horrible vampire comes to try and kill her and her mom. She is thrown into a life which she knows nothing about, and finding out she was a witch is the least of her problems. Then, you have the wonderful men of this book. Darren, a warlock that is quite taken by Ana after she meets her for the first time, and she can't help but to feel the same about him after a few moments they share together. Then there is Tristan, a mysterious vampire who has a beyond deep love for Ana, but she has never met him before in her life, so why does she feel these feelings for him? There are so many burning questions, you will NOT want to stop reading. The paranormal part of this book was just amazing. You had a few things all put together, and they worked perfectly so. Once you thought you had you head wrapped around it all, towards the end they throw a whole new aspect at you. It leaves your head spinning and your jaw on the floor. I totally did not see this ending coming, and I have to read the second and third books to find out what is going to happen next. Overall, this book was a steal. At only 99 cents I felt like I was stealing. If you have the chance, buy this book. It will take you on an amazing journey that you will have to buckle up for. Trust me folks, this book is worth so much more than 99 cents. Happy Reading All! [:

You know how in Stand By Me (and the story it's based on, The Body), the narrator says something about how we never have friends as good as the friends we have in childhood?* In this novel, that's a really good thing. Gwen, Mickey, Tim, Sean and Gordon ("Go-Go") are friends. They explore this giant forest that's behind Gwen's house (this is in the long-ago time when kids were allowed to do things without parental supervision) most of the summer and one day, they find a man who lives in a ramshackle cabin**. Something happens and then the kids don't hang out anymore. Years later when they're grownups, Gordon dies (possibly suicide, possibly an accident) and the other four need to finally discuss and come to terms with what happened that night. This is such a hard book to discuss because it's very Usual Suspects in the way that we only get the truth a bit at a time. (Obviously, I guess, as this is a mystery.) This is a huge departure from her general style, but it's really good. Especially if you can have patience and let the narrative unfold. :) Recommended. In the interest of full disclosure, I know Laura and while I do think of her as "one of my favorite writers, Laura Lippman" and not "my friend Laura," it's probably best to point that out. (At my last job, I used to produce a community news/events show and she was gracious enough to come on twice. And the first time, I think it was literally only my second or third show producing and I didn't know what I was doing. And she still sent me the sweetest email a day or two later. AND she came back a year later---I was much better then.) * = " I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?" ** = I pictured Rustin Parr in The Blair Witch Project
