Disclaimer: No spoilers from Vanish, but read with caution if you have not read Firelight. Jacinda is special and not just because she is a redhead or an identical twin. She is a draki, descended from the dragons of old, with a camouflage developed over centuries: the ability to hide in human skin. But Jacinda is special, even among her own kind: she is a fire-breather - the first in centuries. Her mother knew that their pride of draki would exploit Jacinda - partner her with a powerful mate to create more fire-breathers - and fled the pride with Jacinda and her other daughter, Tamra. The girls’ mother did not count on fleeing worsening their situation. Jacinda fell in love with Will, a mysterious boy who comes from a family of brutal draki hunters. On her last night away from the pride, Jacinda not only betrayed her kind by manifesting in front of hunters and revealing the draki secret to save Will’s life, but she also found out that draki blood runs through Will’s veins. Jacinda returns to the pride with her family after Will is shaded, knowing he will not remember his promise to find her, and knowing that it is probably for the best. Back home, Jacinda has to prove her loyalty to the pride while dealing with mass hostility. At least her and Tamra are closer than ever, but can Jacinda really let go of Will forever? Vanish begins exactly where Firelight left off. The same exact scene. I was really happy with that and it turned out to be really important to the story. I love when a story grabs your attention right at the beginning and what happened to Tamra surprised me and all of the characters in the book. I understand why Jacinda, Tamra, and their mom had to return to the pride. They really had no choice, but I enjoyed reading about the pride life again despite the open hostility toward Jacinda. It was interesting to read about how the place that was home to Jacinda before she left is now a stranger to her. Just another place where she feels trapped. I am really glad that Jacinda and Tamra are re-discovering each other and mending their relationship. This is the first series I have read that features identical twins who are so distant from each other. I do like Tamra a lot better in Vanish but I understand where she was coming from in Firelight.
