This story was really sweet! I felt like the author made the characters realistic and personable. I also like her version of how he finds her. Very creative.
In some ways, one of the most approachable Faulkner works. But also deep! I always find myself rereading this one. And getting into arguments about the characters. Best of all, it has the line "words are no good."
The Good Stuff * Wonderfully stylish and intriguing with lots of twists and turns * Author is brilliant at setting the mood of the story, it feels like you are right in the story * Realistic and engaging heroine * Heartbreakingly sad at times * story goes back and forth during different years and months, but it never feels disjointed * I think will appeal to both mature teens and adults alike * nice historically accurate details * hints of dry humour lighten the mood * Just a plain classy coming of age novel The Not so Good Stuff * Almost missed my bus stop I was so engrossed in the story - also was almost late for work this morning because I HAD to finish it * The beginning was a wee bit confusing on who was who Favorite Quotes/Passages "We pack away lies in that house like you pack away Christmas. We put them in boxes and tape them over." "We'd learned it all in school, how he'd founded Rhode Island on the principle of religious liberty. Everybody should have their own God and get along, said Roger. It was a nice story, but I was still waiting to see how it was all going to work out." "Da didn't have much, but the man knew what to do with a story." What I Learned * that the 40's and 50's just sounds so fascinating, makes me sort of wish I was alive back then * I actually love reading books in this period of history Who should/shouldn't read * This one isn't for the fluff (nothing wrong with fluff mind you) YA fans, this is style and substance * Adults will enjoy as well as the more sophisticated teen reader * A must addiction to all public and school libraries - it will win awards guys 4.5 Dewey's I received this from Scholastic in exchange for an honest review -- thanks Nikole this one was extremely classy

Such a quick read, it's almost not worth it to not read it. An American crime classic that takes you by force on the page when you realize when it was written. It still has the power it did then. Cain is a ferocious writer, taking hard writing to levels Hemingway dreamed, I think. I have much romanticized this book since I read an old copy of it in one sitting at the University of Maryland library. I couldn't take the copy I had with me, so I read it all there. I had a giddy smile on my face the whole time.

I'm taking away a star because I think Bella was a little too melodramatic...and crazy. I'm definitely Team Edward, but man, Jacob. Sometimes he is a jerk, but when he's sweet, he's really sweet =]
I feel kind of neutral about this book. The best way I can describe it is that it was kind of fluff reading but it didn't feel fluffy enough. But it wasn't serious enough to take seriously. It dealt with serious topics, yes, and they were very difficult and interesting situations, but it just wasn't a serious social piece. ALso, I get rather disappointed when characters don't seem to act in accordance with their character all of a sudden or have an "epiphany". Especially an epiphany based on a line about Romeo and Juliet drinking poison together and THAT proves how much they loved each other? I don't buy the concept of love that requires a person to submit themselves. And I felt like the characters spent WAY too much time discussing their problems with other people instead of with whomever the problem concerned. All the decisions were made with other people in absence of those that it concerns and then kind of presented for approval at some face to face discussion that probably should have factored into the decision to begin with. So overall, this book was easy reading and really entertaining... but also kind of annoying and ended all tied up with a pretty bow.

I was stirred by the Ballad of Reading Gaol, but so many of the other poems were of Christian themes, which I found hard to relate to. I didn't realize Wilde was such a Christian! (?!?) Seems incongruous... One thing I got out of his "other poems" was a great variation on the sonnet rhyme scheme that I've been experimenting with ever since: ABBA, ABBA, ABCCBA.

loved it. while it is a little graphic, it's written in the 1300's. which was a very graphic time. it's amazing it's all about a cathedral and building things....and it's still a really good book.
I don't ever remember reading a book that touched me as much as "A Dog's Purpose." I cried and laughed throughout the entire book - getting my nails done, in my my car, and in restaurants. It was SO well written from the dog's point of view. So amazingly touching - really gives me a new appreciation for animals and pets in general. If you love dogs (or really any animal), and can handle reading a wise, touching, hilarious, and sad book - READ THIS!!!
