Oh my...what a wonderfully written book. I must have told everyone to read this book that I've come in contact with this week. I knew people had said it was good, but I wasn't too interested in reading about an Afghani setting, but have come away from this book with a great respect for it's people and their basic culture. The book was a fairly easy read, and just when I thought it couldn't get more interesting, it did...there were several times that I gasped at what was happening and I believe I caught myself saying "no way" and "oh my!" more than once. I can't wait to read A Thousand Splendid Suns!

If you are a Georgia O'Keefe fan, you have probably already read this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who admires the artist and wants to understand her better.

Another brilliant book from the king of fiction; Stephen King. Every new volume of the series seems to step up a gear which isn`t easy as there is 7 volumes in total, but credit to Mr. King, he somehow manages to do it. Before reading this volume of the series, I thought that he couldn`t improve upon the previous one, & with the title `Wolves of the Calla`I thought they were just going to be hunting Wolves or something for the duration of the book(Wolves in the literal sense), which didn`t really appeal to me, but was happy when I found out what it was really about. The story starts out in a remote town where unlike the way it is here in our world, twins are the norm, & singletons are rare. Every generation a group of rides called the Wolves comes & takes one twin from each family & leave the other behind. Eventually the children are brought back (by train), but are changed. They start to grow extremely tall & become fools (why no one seems to know). And now they have been spotted again, but unlike previous times, the townspeople want to make a stand. This is where the Gunslingers come in. They hire them to defend their children against the wolves, which they agree to, as it leads to another magic ball. I loved everything about this book. I especially liked the obvious homage to `The Magnificant Seven`, which although I have not seen, I have seen `The Seven Samurai`by Akira Kurosawa which the Magnificant Seven is based. The story as you can imagine considering the inevitable confrontation with the wolves, has a lot of violence, twists, moments of sorrow & of joy. Many new characters are introduced in the story too, particularly Father Callahan, who by the end of the story has joined their Ka-Tet. This book was a real enjoyable read. 5 Stars!
Atwood's writing had me hooked from the beginning.

I stayed up all night finishing this book and still vividly remember it 15 years later. It was amazing.
I think this is one of the most overrated books of all times... just like woody allen is one of the most overrated directors of all time

The only decent story shares the title of the book. Every story differed little than the last, either the character changed (which was never a male), the setting changed, or the problem changed which was either an identity conflict or blind dependence on someone else. Each story almost always had a caged bird of a woman who was with an unappreciative man or had some sort of dysfunctional relationship with men. Oh Jhumpa, you can only repeat the same themes so many times before someone wishes you would stop writing and instead smash your hand under a hammer. I only liked her style of writing which was compact and dry, it complimented the stories well. Overall it was the lack of variation in the themes that made me want to pull my hair out, I would have liked more variation.
