This autobiography of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali born Dutch ex-parlimentarian best known as the addressee of the letter stabbed into filmmakeer Theo van Gogh's chest at the time of his Amsterdam murder, is an extraordinarly informative account of the life of a woman with every right to critize the culture from which she came. Born in Somilia in 1969, Hirsi Ali (nee Hirsi Magen- she changed her name upon her enterance to the Netherlands) lived a life of domestic abuse, physical mutilitation, cultural, mental, and physical subjugation in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Ethopia, and Kenya, before escaping an arranged marriage and fleeing to Holland in the early 90s. This book, while presenting itself as an explination for Hirsi Ali's abandonment of her religion, streches much further than that- examining such diverse topics as the life of women in Islamic countries (ranging from the pagan-influenced Islam of her Somali grandmother to the staunch rigidness of life in Mecca) to the causes of Somali civil conflict to the outsider's view of European culture to the Dutch political issues surrounding immigration in the last decade. Told in a very readable, first person narrative, I highly recommend this book to any student of politics, culture, religion, current events, or anyone intersted in gaining an insider's prespecitve on a very closed society. -Richard Vaughn, 25 Feb 2007
