One case where the movie may be better than the book.

Only three stars for this one. Too many storylines for my liking

Very possibly one of the most funny books I have read. Basically, it is Bryson's articles published in London about moving back to the states after 20 years of living in England. Each story is only a few pages long, but all of them are hilarious!
This is one of those books that I like more as a whole than its individual parts. I started reading and couldn't stop until I'd finished at almost four in the morning. A lot of the conflict could have been resolved if either Colton or Kendra had chosen to be honest for a change. Instead, it was one misunderstanding after another, because they were both too stubborn to show vulnerability. I didn't care for Kendra at the start, either, as she's a self-centered (with the exception of Noah, her 8 y/o brother), upper class, kind of helpless young woman. However, she grows throughout the course of the book. The chemistry between Colton and Kendra carries this far. It's electric and passionate, whether they're arguing or kissing. I do wish editing was tighter at Wild Rose. Easy mistakes pop up in their books more often than I find in some other publishers (in this one, it tends to be words utilized incorrectly, like loose for lose for instance). They pull me out of a story, though in this case, it was easy to get sucked back in.

Touching stories that brought me back to the night I delivered my baby girl at 4:45am. Childbirth and pregnancy from various perspectives and cultures, including a father's view of the whole experience, which was interesting. A beautiful book that brought me back to one of the sweetest moments in my life.
Great story about living in New Mexico near the end of WWII. Although found in the "Young Adult" section of my local library, I found the protagonist's understanding, dialog, and actions to be that of a much older person.

Written by a daughter and father team about their different perspectives on their grandmother/mother who survived the Cultural Revolution and came to America. Writing is clear, beautiful, particularly the chapters by Winberg Chai.

I don't know why I find these books so compelling, but I do. I think they are the mystery novel version of crack maybe? Or possibly it's just because they are always a good, fast read? I've read all of them out of order and so I managed to read this Erlendur book last, even though it's the first in the series. Thus my reading experience with these has been very disjointed, especially when it comes to his relationship with his kids.Still, it was interesting to see how all the characters were initially set up and the mystery kept my interest. I do feel like things might get lost in the translation, but I really appreciate the brevity and straightforwardness of the writing style. The author manages to get to the point straight away without sacrificing tone, which is impressive. I hope more of the series makes it into translation.
