This was, in many ways, a book that stole my readers virginity. I picked this up in the school library when I was eleven years old, ten years ago. The cover, matching the one I now own, was a spider with a mans head, and in no way appealed to me. But the first chapter, titled 'A girl with a pony' drew me in immediately. Thank God for my horse obsession, or I'd never have discovered these books, and this wonderful author. It was my first fantasy book. It was my first book not directly related to horse. It was my first 'grown up' book - a book that wasn't directed at my age group, but could be enjoyed by all ages. I haven't been the same since these books. They opened the floodgate to the river of longing that is my need for fantasy stories, and lots of them. As well as the long-term ramifications of reading the book (and series), it was just delightful to read a story about such a strong young woman, and she had nearly everything I'd ever wanted. I mean, what eleven year old girl doesn't want the ability to talk to, and turn into, animals? I can't stress enough how much this book changed me. Tamora Pierce, more than any other author, is the reason I write my own stories, and the reason I want only strong, independent female characters in any story I now read. I've since read, and bought, the Alanna series and begun the Circle of Magic series along with Tricksters Choice. For any one with young teenagers, or younger children, it is within your best interests to read to, or give them, this book. It can't do anything but bring them extreme happiness and a desire for books.

Typical chick-flick type book - very easy read. Great fluff for beach reading!

WONDERFUL! Given the premise, I was concerned that this would be a modern rip-off of Little Women -- after all, it's about 4 very different sisters who befriend a lonely boy (albeit on the 3 week vacation). But these characters are absolutely lovely, and written with a warmth I haven't seen since DiCamillo's The Tale of Despereaux. Their relationships and conflicts are entirely unique and funny. Even adults ought to think about picking it up for light, sunny summer reading! If only I could run around in butterfly wings like 4-year-old Batty... [Booktalk this!: 8-12 year old girls.]

Newbery Honor book, Underneath, is a story about a calico cat about to give birth, an abused and neglected hound dog, and a bitter man who lives only to drink and kill. Sad story written in a poetic writing style. It's doubtful children would enjoy the book.

The first time I started this book I only read 3 pages and just couldn't get into it. But I'm supposed to lead the discussion for book group, so I gave it another try. What was I thinking before?! I was totally absorbed and haven't put the book down all weekend. Sarah's voice is marvelous and the characters are wonderful. Plus I think there was something in me that needed a Western right now. I've been a bit of a reading funk, and this pulled me right out. Excellent.

This is one of my favorite books by John Steinbeck. I first read this book in 9th grade. I liked reading Of Mice and Men because it shows me many different views of life. Like how Lenny was a big man but very sensitive. The way George took care of Lennie and George was smaller than him. When the old man had to kill his dog, it was sad because he didn't want anyone else to do it, but him. Since he has been with his dog so long he loved him so much that he had to kill him. It forshadowed the way George did Lennie. Because of the fact that George loved Lennie he had to kill him himself to protect him. This book is great, even though it's short. It's a must read.
Much better than Blink. Educators need to consider some of these points.

All the descriptions of snow and the scientific aspect in the novel made it an interesting read.
