I definitely have a book hangover from this one. That is, I'm having trouble concentrating on the next book because I'm still lost in the world of this one. I found this book was very slow to start. It took a few hundred pages for me to get into it, and even then it was only the small humourous parts that kept me going. Gabaldon really sets up her books for a slam bang finish, though! The last 600 pages were hard to put down. I was reading in the car, on the can (sorry), during commercials, after the kids went to bed, before the kids got up, during my recumbent bike workouts... any chance I could find, I had the book in my hand. I love when books do that to me! Alas, it's done, and now I have to spend some time in present. It will be a little while before I get into the next in the series, but that's okay. This one will keep me for a bit.

In On Location chapters are set up around one city each, and for each city a few movies are listed that were shot there. Usually these are movies where the city itself plays a memorable part as well. There's a small high level map on where to locate places from certain scenes. And for each movie there's a plot description, almost like an essay, which I thought was tedious. If you've seen the movie you don't need a plot description, if you haven't seen the movie chances are you're either not interested or you want to see it before you find out the plot in a travel book. I get what they are trying to do there, tying together the scenes that feature locations in the city, but I would have been much happier just seeing a listing saying "place X: short scene description + address Y". That way a lot more content could have been thrown in as well, because now the selection is arbitrary. There are a lot more movies, a lot more cities even that could have been included. Ultimately I wouldn't use this as a travel guide, it's more for people who like to read about (popular) movies.

Brilliant! Easy, inspiring read. And I'm sure if I read it again, I'll get a whole different set of 'take homes'.

Jeremy read this selection aloud. The last book he read to me was Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, with a perfect Ninny Threadgood voice and everything. This presented problems, because Jeremy's Sackett was unnerving, and actually caused him physical pain. Not to mention the character itself, who was all noble-seeming, but struck me as being kind of a dick. It took a few chapters to finally start giving a shit about "the fens", or Sackett in general. More intriguing is the existence of the movie based on Louis L'Amour's Sackett series, starring Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot (only $9 at Wal*Mart).

I loved this book! A very fun soap opera type beachy read!!!! :)
This book really moved me and i really enjoyed it. Some of the miracles that happened in this book amazed me! God is great in every single way !
"The Clothes They Stood Up In" is such great food for thought. (There is one scene that is rated PG-13). But I didn't enjoy it as much as I did "The Lady In The Van," which is a true story of a transient who takes up residence in her van outside of the author's home. Amazing insights into what possessions are and the meaning we allow them to give to our lives.

Good overview of several different approaches to homeschooling including a classical education, unit studies, Charlotte Mason, and unschooling. The sections on carschooling and unit studies were especially helpful and I liked some elements of the Charlotte Mason approach as well. However, the book felt a bit like a "bait-and-switch." There is absolutely nothing on the front or back cover to indicate the heavy Christian focus. A homeschooling book geared toward Christians who want to incorporate their faith into their educational approach would have a particular audience and that's just fine. I'm Christian and I'm sure that will influence how and what I teach my children, but mention it on the cover, people. I almost didn't get past the second article because it started veering too far into the realm of bearing-witness-of-narrowly-defined-faith-promoting stories when what I wanted was some solid information of homeschooling methods - incidentally, what the cover promised. I'm glad I kept reading because there really is some valuable info there, but I'm a fan of truth in advertising and I don't think this book delivered that.
