David Liss is my new favorite author. Rarely am I lucky enough to read a book that I really love. Even rarer is it for me to love all of the books I've read written by a single author. I'm impressed by David Liss, I know I'm a hard audience to please. Earlier this year my book club selected 'The Whiskey Rebels' for our group read, I loved it. I thought it was a wonderful blend of history and suspense with an entertaining protagonist at it's center. I hoped that his other novels would be as enjoyable and soon after read 'A Conspiracy of Paper' and 'A Spectacle of Corruption'. I loved them as well and was thrilled to learn that David Liss had another installment of Benjamin Weaver's exploits coming out this summer. Our hero's current intrigues revolve around the British East Indian Company and it's quest to dominate the textile market. He is pulled into a web of deceit by Jerome Cobb who is blackmailing him to serve his own purposes. Weaver will need to unravel a complicated knot of animosities and allegiances in order to command his own life once again. David Liss does a fabulous job of painting a descriptive picture of London in the eighteenth century, weaving interesting history into an engaging and suspenseful story. I love learning the origin of words and the history of London, especially the Rules of the Fleet, while being entertained. I was not disappointed with the latest in this series and I hope David Liss goes on to write many more stories about the clever and charismatic Benjamin Weaver. Some women have a thing for Rod Stewart or Patrick Dempsey. I have a 'thing' for Ben Weaver. Okay, I have to amend my earlier statement and be completely honest, my only disappointment with this book was that Ben was never with a woman so that I could imagine myself being that woman. *smirk* I can't wait to see what the next installment will bring for my hero.

A series of short stories tied together by an overarching mythology. A mesmerising read from a talented new author. The book acts as a prequel, or precursor, to a new dark fantasy series. I can't wait for the first volume.

This is a novelization of the story of St. John Vianney the Cure D'Ars by a prolific Catholic author who specialized in historical novels. This is geared towards the young adult audience, but of course is very suitable for all. She focuses half of the novel on the young John Vianney and his life on the farm, conscription, and effort to become a priest followed by his life as a priest and the major effect he had on the town of Ars that transformed the people there and drew crowds from across Europe for confession and spiritual direction. Gives a good look at the saint and an idea of his spiritual life and the demonic attacks on him. I listened to the Librivox version of the book that was narrated quite well from Marie Therese who has narrated other bits of pious Catholic fiction. This is solid family listen. For a more detailed look at this great saint, I would highly recommend The Cure D'Ars Today by Fr. Rutler which is a great read.

I really enjoyed this account of Orwell's stay in Spain during their Civil War in the 30s. His style is so engrossing, even when he is writing autobiographically. Unlike some of the other Great Journey books, his descriptions don't drag out and he really keeps the reader hanging on his every word. A fantastic introduction to the war and the forces at work on either side.
Instead of the usual young male narrator away at school (a la Catcher in the Rye, A Separate Piece) whose teenage angst and adolescent confusion make them feel awkward and out of place, this male narrator plain old was awkward and out of place. He was a sweetheart though, so as you can imagine this book was an adorable read…very funny and touching. Plus, it was chock full of pop culture references...oh, and British. Too bad the movie is in that in between theaters and dvd stage...oh well, just a few more weeks.

That's as human as it's painful.

I read this several years ago and just barely remember it. I do remember thinking that Francesca Lia Blockhas the ability to perfectly attune to the sentiments of your average teenager. The main character feels put-upon by the world and the struggles she's had to face so Mab (real or imagined) is there to spar with her and encourage her when there is no one else she feels she can trust. And come on, what teenage girl didn't wish at some point that there was a special fairy or guardian angel to keep her company and watch over her?
Well...I picked up this book to find out more about Jane and her relationship with Mental Illness. She does a great job of chronicling her life, but I found she glossed over alot of the deeper reasons for her choices regarding her brushes with Depression ( her mothers death) and was disappointed that she did not mention anything about Ted Turner and his Bi Polarism, nor did she identify Vadim as Hyperthymic which it seems very obvious he was. For the amount of time she spent with Hayden there is really not alot of detail there either. I think she told it like it was from her perspective as a 60 something, but would have liked more grit and soul delving. I didnt feel it really dug to the heart, but as the title says " My life so far" My hope is that she gets there...and I congratulate her on her attempts!

A great blend of characters and real life situations. Based in the world of science and law, a girl was born as a genetic match to her sister to be a bone marrow match because her sister is diagnosed with cancer at 3.
