I absolutely loved this sequel to "The Magicians." If you're a big fan of the Chronicles of Narnia or The Dark is Rising series, these books adopt the conventions of those novels then bends them. There are a lot of popular fantasy references Grossman throws in and if you don't recognize them, I think you'll miss a lot of the humor of this series. The plot and the characters often follow those fantasy books, but Grossman takes them to darker levels that, while they involve dryads and magical keys, still capture the depth of emotions of a literary novel.

3.75* I was really disappointed when this book ended! I love the Donovan family that Victoria Dahl has created. It’s a fun, yummy and sexy read! The first Donovan we meet is Tessa, the baby sister who works hard to keep her family together at whatever cost. Having lost her parents at a young age, she has a deep seated fear of losing her brothers as well. When her family’s brewery is robbed, she meets sexy cop Luke Asher. Soon she begins keeping secrets from everyone in order to keep everything and everyone together. Soon it all falls through her fingers and she realizes she may just have to let go just a little to have it all. What I love about Victoria Dahl’s characters, especially her female characters, is that they are strong, independent woman, confident with themselves and with their own sexuality. They don’t apologize for who or what they are, but walk confidently in the world. Tessa is no different except when it comes to her brothers. They fight constantly and this leads her to fear that they may eventually get sick of everything and leave her and change her world. Then she meets a sexy detective who makes her see the real reasons behind her fears and helps to open up her life to new possibilities. I really liked Luke, though at first I was a little put off by his inability to be more open with Tessa. However, when it came right down to it and he had to be honest with himself, he couldn’t deny the feelings he had for Tessa, and he opened up beautifully. As usual Victoria Dahl doesn’t disappoint with the steam. It is scorching hot between Tessa and Luke and this is a great beginning to a series I cannot wait to read more of! provided to me by netgalley for review Find my reviews at page 317.

I won this book on Goodreads and I learned a lot from it: I hadn't realized that such a thing as "Evangelical Catholicism" existed. Robert Barron, the author of this book and the movement's leader, is well educated in the history of religion and the details he provided about daily life in Jesus's time are fascinating. (his description of the Temple in Jerusalem stands out). So do his anecdotes about the lives of famous Catholics like Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa. But anecdotes are not the point of this book; Catholicism is. Like many educated and ardent believers, Barron writes eloquently about his religion. I'm still sticking with mine.
