Flat-out one of the most complete, compelling fictional novels ever constructed. McCarthy is a master and this book will haunt you.

** spoiler alert ** I really like the interaction (what there is, anyway) between Nancy and her father in this one. While he's usually not particularly involved in her cases past wanting her to be careful, he's feeling doubly protective as both father and client. I love any of the books that really focus on them, so this one I'm definitely fond of.

Stephen King recommended author.
The Chicago worlds fair has a fascinating history. This book paired the fair with the story of serial killer in Chicago at the same time. The fair history could get tedious, so pairing the stories made this an easy and interesting read. Who knew that America's competition to France's Eiffel Tower was.... (I wont ruin in, but you will chuckle.
marvelous!!! I LOVE it!!!

** spoiler alert ** Jones has written several other books during 2008 such as “Love and other uses for Duct Tape.” In this new book, NEED, Jones jumps on the bandwagon of supernatural love stories similar to Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight. This book doesn’t talk about vampires, but instead about pixies. In this book, the main character Zara lives in Charleston. She is devastated when her step father dies, and then is brought to the brink of losing it when she begins to see a strange man everywhere she goes, pointing at her. Other people think she’s crazy and they don’t seem to see the man. Then when she is sent to Maine to live with her grandmother she sees him there too. Soon she makes some friends who see the man as well. She is quickly pulled into a world where her friends believe in what she has never even thought possible. As she fights for her freedom from a pixie king who presumable wants to claim her as queen, she falls hard for our leading man Nick, a gorgeous boy from her school, with a protector complex. Zara ends up needing his protection and the protection of others as she learns that there are things in this universe she has never dreamed of such as the “were” all sorts of “shifters” half humans that change into not only werewolves, but werebears, weartygers and more. Slowly she learns that her parents were wrapped up in a battle with these mystical creatures’ decades ago, and that they may have been the cause of her step-father’s death. The book tells the spooky tale of how Zara figures out what is going on and how she can make sure she and everyone she loves come out okay in the end. Now although I have discovered that there are a few other series’ that talk about pixies, I haven’t read any of them and so was new to this whole idea that pixies are somewhat evil and frightening. I thought this book was pretty good. Zara is quirky and has an affinity for reciting the names of odd phobias. I agree with some other reviewers you will find that the book could definitely have been longer. At right around 300 pages it is significantly shorter than other books in this type of genre. Some situations seemed rushed and like if the book had been 50-100 pages longer they could have been more developed and better explained. The characters often seemed a little corny and unrealistic for how high-schoolers would act and talk. The characters felt more like middle-schoolers to me. I did really enjoy the relationship with Zara’s love interest Nick, who is an awesome character. Their interaction is sweet and compelling. Over all, if you like these kinds of books, I would recommend you read this one. By no means is it a winner like some of the other books I’ve reviewed here (Gone, Twilight series) but it is interesting and cute. I also read that there’s a sequel in the works, Captivate hits shelves January 2010, so if you’re a series addict, like I seem to be becoming, you just might need, to check out NEED!

Miriam and Saul are made for each other. But the road they travel is a rocky one. Miriam has always been ready to be a godly wife and mother, never thinking she will leave the community where she belongs. Saul has lead a double life. On one hand he has been a wonderful member of the community, and on the other he is a man with multiple family problems. The loss of his mother has led his father to drink, something Saul has tried to keep out of the public square. But, he doesn't think he can take it anymore. But, could Saul really leave? If he leaves, how will his brothers handle his father and the drinking? While she vows to stay by his side, Miriam finds that God shows her more of Himself and His plan for her life. Their story takes many twists and turns. Will they go away together, stay, or go their separate ways? Beth Wiseman answers these questions and more. I love Amish fiction, and Beth Wiseman is one of the best! Her characters and story become real and almost impossible to put down because she takes the time to do her research. This book is great for individuals and groups alike. Many topics can be explored in discussion such as: alcoholism, family grief, depths of love, forgiveness, and commitment. I received a copy through Net Galley and thank them for the opportunity.
Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters was wonderful and quintessential J.D. Salinger. I loved it. However, Seymour: An Introduction was painfully introspective and too difficult for me to sit and finish. Unfortunately, my attention span is rather short.
As usual, Salvatore doesn't disappoint... and, as usual of late, he doesn't fail to break my heart a little, either.
