The personal story kept me on track. This time period is so rough, and yet I want and need to know about it. (nook)

I read all 3 Lord John books in a row while in Portugal. I accidentally read them out of order but it didn't really matter since they are mainly short stories (which was perfect for traveling). I was a little apprehensive about this series after being forewarned about gay sex scenes but this only occurred in Brotherhood of the Blade. Overall, I read this series because I love Gabaldon's stories and characters but it doesn't compare with the Outlander series.

This was a departure from my normal books -- main character is a young, hot-shot investment banker in Manhattan who gets involved in a mystery involving ancient books, a wealthy family in England, and oddly enough, some online computer game. Story was pretty good, and there was enough suspense to keep me reading, but I thought the main character, Edward, was sorta flat. Would have been better if he'd been a stronger character.

Nice book about the power of love and loyalty. It was nice reading about the SEALs and what they go through and about the characters' love for each other. However, I've read other books similar to this one and I can say that it could have been a bit better. The suspense left a lot to be desired but it was a good book nonetheless. Definitely recommend it!

Rollins writes many of his novels in the same fashion: group of scientists discover something, are attacked by creatures born of someone's worst nightmare, many scientists die horrible deaths, protagonist wins out against impossible odds, all is well. A curious distinction here is Rollins' inclusion of the idea that there are no "good" guys or "bad" guys. Just "greedy" guys. You don't want to be a greedy guy in one of these books. I read this while on the beach in the Dominican, and found it to be a terrific beach escape.
The interesting thing about this book is that it presented the Palestinian viewpoint of the conflict in the Middle East and put faces to the Palestinian people. It was a good reminder that everything we read in a newspaper or book has a point of view and purpose. Well worth the read.
I wanted so much to like this book, but I JUST couldn't get into it. It felt forced to me, like being hit over the head with historical slang, costume, and reference. Now, let's be honest, the problem could lay entirely with my own modern sensibilities. But considering how much I enjoy Victorian London, the theater and young female protagonists...well, it can't be ALL my fault.
I enjoyed this young adult fictional work. It was an interesting twist on the Snow White story, with a look at how our appearance can cloud our judgment. It was also interesting to read because I often see the author walking her dog around my block as she lives down the street. She also wrote Ella Enchanted that I haven't read yet.
