Romantic comedy. Nothing special but it was a nice light read. Not full of raunchy sex which was nice. Good for an afternoon read.

Back when I was a shy, awkward teenager who didn't fit into my small high school, Sassy magazine was my savior. It was written and edited by smart, outspoken women (and men) who weren't afraid to call themselves feminists. Sassy brought underground culture to small town girls like me who didn't have a cool big sister or older friend to show her the ropes. Sassy was written for the girl who didn't want to go to the prom, or who did, but wore combat boots and a vintage dress. The authors of this book has basically penned a love letter to this short lived, amazing magazine. It covers the very beginnings to the sad demise, to the new wave of Sassy inspired magazines, such as Bust and Bitch (but not so much Jane). Sassy, you still hold a place in my heart, and this book satisfied the 16 yr old in me.

I read this book in my honors French class in high school and then again in college. I then read it after I became a junior high English teacher. Each time, I discovered something relevant to my life at that time. A sweet story, and much like Charlotte's Web, has a lot to say about friendship, loyalty and perserverance.

ah, the bronte sisters living in the moors(?) or english country or london writing depressing tales of romance, solitude and betrayal i still have to read this book too!!! this one has multiple shelfing possibilities: collecting dust, still have to read, and probably will be one of my all time favorites when i finally get around to reading it!
This is probably my least favorite of the trilogy, not necessarily because it is less well-written than the others, but because the arrival of Mordred means the end of Arthur, and I hate having these stories come to an end. Actually, the character isn't known as Mordred throughout the book, but rather Dylan the Orphan. He grew up with Arthur's son from his first wife, but had no idea who he was until Nithe came for him when he was eleven. It always strikes me as a slightly sad book, since Dylan spends the whole of it trying to gain his father's acknowledgment and approval and find a place for himself within the framework of Camelot. A band of brothers springs up, giving him a family of sorts: Dylan (aka, Mordred), son of Arthur and Morgause, Borre, son of Arthur and Samana (his first wife), and Garath, son of Pelleas and Morgause. There are also the Lady Mal, who operates the local inn, plays dress-up as a bard, and takes on the role of older sister to Dylan and Viki, daughter of Pelleas, with whom Dylan falls in love. Royal romances never being easy things, that provides some twists of its own, and all of it tied up in the recognition, public or private, that Dylan so craves from Arthur.

Washington Post contributor Paula Span realized she would soon become a caregiver to her aging father. Thus, she began looking at options and has compiled stories of families in similar situations. She provides frank information about each option including moving parents into your house, assisted living, nursing homes, and hospice. Through personal stories she explains the pros and cons of each otpion. Each chapter concludes with quesitons to consider. She also discusses Medicare and Medicaid and what each one covers. Book and websites for further information are also included. The book is logically organized from early aging to end of life. Readers will come away well-informed and with a clearer pictures of the options available to their parents. This book is recommended for those currently forcing these issues or who will be soon.
Right now this book is intimidating, but in a few months it will be helpful.
What I liked about this book is King's use of adjectives. I read the book to my fifth graders. They could vividly see the scenes described. With me, it led into them writing using descriptive sentences. The book is one you don't want to put down..another adventure story of King's!

You surely would say: "This is similar to..." Well, yes, those zombie/vampire movies, "I Am Legend", "The Road", etc. But this must have been THE original and even if I was expected to dislike it without its "novelty", it was still and engrossing read for me. Triffids are plants. One day, they suddenly decide to walk. They are blind, but they can sense and somehow hear. They do not move fast, but they can shoot poisoned arrows from their stems, they aim at your head, and if you're hit you die. Men however did not destroy these triffids and instead tried to culture them for some useful purposes. But there was this prolonged meteor shower which practically everyone watched. Those who watched went completely blind the next day. Killer plants, then they went blind. But it wasn't enough. The plague came next killing many. There are few survivors (and we're talking worldwide), most of them blind. A few still have their eyesight, having failed to watch the meteor shower (a character doubts this was purely a meteor shower, maybe some sattelites with lethal cargo got hit, he says). The triffids are easy to kill, but they can as easily multiply. They are as blind as the blind humans but they are much better sensing things. They can even somehow communicate. Food and fuel running low; triffids multiplying fast, feeding on the rotting corpses. How do you find hope in such a world? What happens to the sense of right and wrong, to love, marriage, happiness and memory? There are plenty of ruminations like these here apart from triffids being barbecued by flame throwers. That is why this will remain new to its first-time readers and has remained a must-read classic.
