My sister gave a compelling review of this book, so I gave it a try. For a book about compulsive eating, it doesn't really do much with MSG, which surprised me. There is a lot of discussion about fat, sugar, salt, and how they are layered and loaded to create what the author calls conditioned hypereating. Now, there is a little discussion of food flavorings ... but nothing really on MSG, which, as an excitotoxin and something very commonly added to the types of foods he discusses in order to create the kind of compulsive eating that is the focus of the book ... well, I guess I expected him to say something more about it. As I read this book, I realized that I'm not really the target audience. If you are someone who is compulsive about food or feels out of control about food or eats way too much as habit, etc. ... then this book is directed toward you. The author is a person in this category, and his own personal franticness about this topic can be felt throughout the book, which is both interesting and redundant. There is a lot of repetition in this book, I think because the author kept having the same sort of "aha" as he was doing the research, so he kept presenting all the different angles of his epiphany. But it didn't build for me. However, if I were in his target audience, it may have felt more revelatory rather than redundant. As I read, I also thought that one very basic thing that could apply to the situations and compulsions he talks about is to SLOW DOWN when eating. Over and over, he describes how people wolf down these overly palatable foods. If they slowed down to really taste what they were eating, it might go a long way to changing their relationship with that food. The book The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss came to mind several times as I read ... that I wish I could recommend this book to the author of The End of Overeating.

I'm not normally much of a mystery reader but this book had me from the blurb on the inside jacket - and I was completely wrapped up in it til the very end. More than a year after the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Carly, Neily still has nightmares about finding her dead body. His exclusive private high school is torture for him as he is reminded of his times shared with Carly as well being forced to deal with the crappy antics of his classmates. Right at the start of his senior year, he is confronted by Audrey, cousin of Carly. Audrey's father was found guilty of murdering Carly and Audrey is determined to prove his innocence - with Neily's help of course. As Neily and Audrey begin to investigate Carly's life, they begin to find out about the secrets she was keeping and the hurt she was dealing with. While All Unquiet Things doesn't necessarily stick to the most realistic of plot lines, it is still an incredibly enjoyable journey. There were many twists and surprises and the resolution of the story isn't easily predictable. Perhaps what I liked most is that, as the reader, I felt like I was learning things along with Audrey and Neily rather than shouting at the pages that something was so painfully obvious. Although I was a little bit disappointed with the end (I felt as if justice wasn't really served, but rather things had an easier, final conclusion), I was pleased with this story overall. Due to themes of violence, rape, sex, and heavy drug use, this won't be one for the tweens. However, older teens might appreciate the thrill of getting to the bottom of Carly's murder.
