The book seemed confusing at some times. I didn't really understand why some of the parts were included in the book. It was interesting following through seeing where Lily's life was during certain months then going back to the summer, yet when it first started doing that I had no idea what was going on. But all in all, I actually did enjoy the book.

I'm becoming quite a major fan of Michael Pollen. This is a wonderful, informative, thoughtful book.

Adding this book reminded me that I need to continue reading this series. Something about these books appeals very perfectly to my junior high self (probably the awesome gothiness of it). On top of that the sandman is a great character, neither good nor bad, but certainly powerful and subject to emotions (sort of like a goth greek god).
This is one fantastic graphic novel about graphic novels or, as McCloud calls them, comics. I really didn't think that he'd have that much to say but this book is packed with interesting scholarly ideas about sequential art and this graphic novel format is ideal for discussing these ideas because he can show us exactly what he means. There are a couple tiny loopholes in this work- the definition of sequential art that McCloud uses includes picturebooks, but that makes it perfect for me to use, because that's what I study. Also, while McCloud is rather dismissive of graphic novels that are created by a team of writer, illustrator, inker, and colorist, it seems to me, albeit that I am way less of an expert in this field than McCloud is, that most of the graphic novels are produced this way. Granted, they generally aren't of the ground-breaking artistic quality that McCloud is most often discussing, but I have to talk about picturebooks as a whole media rather than just acknowledging the best of the bunch. Anyway, this is a fabulous book- you should pick it up!
The book brought back memories of the racial tension in the country when I was attending college. I think particularly of the athletes that had come to a small Midwestern college and the challenges that they faced in that all white environment.

This is a terrific book. Its ostensible subject is the imporvement movements that took place in the early to mid-nineteenth century as farmers came to realize that their practices were destroying soil fertility. But while the book is a splendid evocation of that era, Stoll is also unafraid to draw parallels to today's situation, which makes this truly a book with a powerful and relevant message.

I really liked this - I thought Mirabelle was a believable, interesting character and I was surprised how successfully Steve Martin was able to capture her perspective. It was kinda funny how the ending turned out as well!

I had a temp job back in May which, for the first week, afforded a lot of down time. The other guys I worked with and I would end up sitting around often with nothing to do, and as we worked around books, we'd start reading. I came across this one knowing full well what it was... it was one of those titles people claim change their lives. The sort of thing recommended vigorously by people that might not even know what "Alchemist" means, even after reading the book. I'd long been skeptical, but decided to give it a shot... I didn't want anything too lengthy, since I -was- technically at work. I must say I was surprised... the story went along without being too preachy, and developed a little magical world around it. Coelho also has a rather simple writing style which works well with the story. It had a simple message to it, one I'd heard a thousand times, so I can't say it was life altering, but it was definitely a good quick read. If I could give half-stars, this would be a 3.5

Think it was a really boring book! Took forever to read, and I'm not going to read it again.. Not a type of writing I like..
