** spoiler alert ** Mirabelle sells gloves at Neiman Marcus. She lives alone. She suffers from depression and relies on medication to keep her going. She has two cats, but one spends his time hiding under furniture. She is 28 but still lives in an apartment--sorry, Martin calls it a flat--that is reminiscent of a college dwelling. She has no sofa, only a low-to-the-ground futon. She is attractive but doesn't realize when men notice her looks. She is too naive to spot a frenemy in Neiman's coworker Lisa. She has daddy issues because her father, who fought in Vietnam, has a hard time talking about his feelings. Mr. Ray Porter is a sharp dresser. He's fifty-something. Rich. Recently divorced. He doesn't understand that women misinterpret his words. He travels a lot. Mirabelle is insecure and apparently needs a man to hold her to make her feel better about herself. Mr. Ray Porter doesn't realize he's on the prowl for a companion, and instead he develops pseudo-relationships with a number of women in a misguided attempt to find what he's looking for. They find each other and go through the motions of courtship. Mr. Ray Porter breaks Mirabelle's heart. She is a woman, after all, and thus weak. Mr. Ray Porter, a man, cannot know what he has done to her because he is a man. He continues to support her financially, and ultimately realizes that theirs was the relationship of parent and child. Oh, yeah--and there's a guy named Jeremy. At first, he is a disappointing companion. He doesn't pay for dinner. He can't get it up right away. He is transformed by an on the road experience with rock bands, and runs into Mirabelle a renewed man. They get back together, and fall in love. But still, Mirabelle keeps a picture of Mr. Ray Porter in her private drawer. Did this review bore you? Then don't bother reading the book. It's a full 130 pages of this. Look at it this way: I read the book, so you don't have to. Few authors can get away with telling the reader everything he needs to know. Steve Martin, in my opinion, isn't one of them. I adore some of his other work, and I would have felt uncomfortable writing a bad review if this book didn't exploit the most trite stereotypes of women, men, and relationships in such a dreary manner.
