One third of this anthology is really good, one third is okay, and the remaining third is crap. I think I was more enamored with the mystery that was James Tiptree (Alice Sheldon) than I was her stories. The writing reminded me of Ian Banks, but at some point Banks explains what he's writing, and I felt Tiptree just left you with a feeling of what the fuck.

This is a wonderful book, really exposes Wagner's personality and his relationships to other great composers, philosophers, conductors, and politicians of his day.

As an adventure this is not one of Heinlein's better stories, although enjoyable enough. As a treatise on the cold war, racism, slavery, the feminist movement, and morality it truly earns its billing as "the most controversial book in science fiction." Amazingly this story was published in 1961 at the height of tension between USSR and USA; the whole nation was caught up in visions of an apocalyptic nightmare. There were bomb shelters, many as elaborate as the one that Hugh Farnham built in this novel outfitted with everything needed to restart civilization. At the same time, the tension surrounding segregation was also coming to a head. As a result of a nuclear strike, Hugh's family is thrown into a world where everything they know is upside down and topsy-turvy. The family consists of Hugh, his wife Grace, son Duke, daughter Karen, Duke's girlfriend Barbara, and Jim his negro caretaker. Farnham is one of Heinlein's prototypical 'get-it-done', brilliant, well-read, enlightened, and prudent characters. Hugh is of course not a a racist, not a chauvinist, does not believe in class superiority (we're all equal),not a Russian hater, and is true to his word in the highest degree. It's definitely worth reading in context of what was happening in the country at the time. If the story were as good as the commentary woven throughout then it would be a 5 start must read on my list.

How one little puppy can change a person and make them change themselves is just amazing and a really good book to see someone go from hating themselves to loving them and the family bonding is great

A ghost story; a morbid one at that. But so beautifully and painfully written - I felt fierce as I read it. I devoured this book while pregnant, with an older child the age of, well, the child in the book. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who can't stand some suffering and gore; that said, it was one of the most human and beautiful books I've read.
Really intense book, about the future where there is no more North America. The country Panem has a capital surrounded by 12 districts. Every year the capital has what is called The Hunger Games where a boy and girl from each district are selected to "compete" which is a where the last person standing is the winner. When all of the other tributes are dead but one the games are over. Interesting future, probably 4 1/2 stars for me...book two is due out sept 2009.

Two simple intertwined premises, near-perfect execution. The first is that citizens of a free society carry with them an extraordinary responsibility for the responsible governance of that society. The complaints about everything from fast food to sleazy politicians are little more than tilting at windmills unless The People decide to stop empowering that which we loathe. The second is that effects of war--especially in an age of mass destruction--have with them the ability to wipe out our history, our culture, the very things that we use to define a civilization. In what we refer to as a democracy, the power of war was supposed to rest with the legislature (the House, specifically) keeping it as close to the people as possible. When we abdicate that responsibility and give it up to a single person, and then buy in to the manufactured climate of conflict, the consequences are catastrophic.

Holes is a good book turned into movie; its about a boy named Stanley Yelnants. he was accused of stealing sneakers from an orphange and he is charged. his punishment is to go to some camp and dig holes all day. The kids are treated harshly at the camp; and Stanley finds out that his family is rich; so he diggs up the treasure; the camp gets closed down and charges are dropped. Holes is a good book for everyone to read; very adventurous and comical at some points; this hit book turned into movie is a must read for everyone if you havent yet.
James Patterson has mastered the art of the mystery. I like his short chapters and how he slips from first person to third person between chapters. I really like his character Alex Cross. Even his kids and grandmother (Nana Momma - who is a kick in the pants). Very real, very good plots. All around good stories. This one was a bit scary. The plot was so plausible that I had to stop reading at certain parts, or just past them, so I could go to sleep. Good Job James!

This was unlike any book I have ever read - mainly because of its tone. I loved the humor, and I laughed out loud several times. On the other hand, the stark greusomenss of other parts was horrifying. Great contrast. In the first half of the book, I kind of kept thinking "ok, you've made your point - beaurocracies are ridiculous and inefficient," but in the second half it picked up. I really enjoyed it.
