This story was so enthralling, I couldn't put it down! I even had to read it whilst brushing my teeth. Heart-wrenching yet inspiring, this book shows just how far a human being can stretch for survival.

I have just finished reading this book. I was quite impressed and found out a few things about Reagan, Gorbachev, and Bush that I did not know before. Gorbachev ended the Cold war through circumstances that he really helped put into place. Reagan encouraged Gorbachev to do what was needed. Also, Reagan almost turned 360 degrees on his views of Russia. I thought this was just an excellent read and I would encourage others to read it.
This was a cute book, I liked it alot.

I spent soooooo long reading this book and it seemed like nothing ever really happened in it. So many hours I will never get back - thoroughly disappointing. I know the critics love it, but I just can't agree. This falls under the category of "books to be thrown with great force".
Any book where the dog is the hero is going to be one I love. This one made me laugh and cry.

Lincoln the Revolutionary, Lincoln the Crusader, the Visonary-- this collection of essays addresses a side of Lincoln that is largely overlooked while slapping down the Neo-Confederate Revisonists. Those who tout the Myth of The Confederacy As Heirs to 1776 ( a popular fable here in the Commonwealth) will read this book and shrilly denonounce it. They will have however have to marshall something more than the "Standing up For Their Rights) argument as McPherson allows the words of the Confederates to speak for themselves. More importantly, he strips away the mythology surrounding Lincoln's actions and his goals and assesses them for what they were: the logical progression of the Revolutions of 1776 and 1787 (if you find that reference puzzling- come see me. Bring Bourbon)- at once a revolution that overthrew the existing social and political order, and a fulfillment of the earlier Revolution's philosophical goals. I used to assign this book as required reading in my American History classes. Go read it and find out why.
There is nothing like the feeling of finishing a 900-page book and wishing you had another 900 pages to go. I was not a connoisseur of Victorian literature, and admittedly have not begun another Eliot book yet (although 2 are waiting on my shelves), but this story was engaging and exciting and FULL of fancy words you'd find on the GRE vocabulary list - in other words, an excellent study guide. Ironically, I read this book thinking it had been recommended to me, when in fact I had been told to read 'Middlesex.' What a great twist of irony in my favor! I hope I read this again in my lifetime.
as always - documented, documented, documented. lots of research and very well told.
may be me, may be you.

Volume 6 winds up the Akira saga. This is the best manga I have read. The Japanese are the masters of monster-making. I still could not really tell if Tetsuo was dead at the end or not. His being seemed to infuse everything. Very Buddhist. I wonder why Akira never talked and only uttered gutteral sounds.
